As far as saving them all? You are right, they can't all be saved, BUT, if more people had their pets fixed, there would be far fewer critters being killed at the shelters every day. I think we can all agree that killing a perfectly healthy, well-adjusted critter is sad.

It is sad. That is exactly why some of these rescues should be more lax on some of their criteria. I understand they want to find such and such pup a forever home...but I can think of 6+ just off the top of my head without sitting down and actually counting that I know personally have been turned down from adopting a pet and have since purchased a dog instead. All of these that I know would make great pet owners. Now no one can predict the future and tell if they'll never surrender the dog or if the dog will get loose and hit by a car. No one can. This could happen even in the houses that are approved. But those are 6 dogs right there that could've been saved from being put to sleep. 6 dogs that might have found their forever homes but instead are still sitting in their 4x4 pen starved for attention. Its ridiculous the hoops the normal joe has to go to in order to adopt.

We all have the right to make choices, and we should be tolerant of each others choices.

.

Thats exactly the point I was making. Thank you. Just like religion - you'll convert more people with honey instead of brimstone and hell.

ASPCA wasn't going to let me adopt Mac and Tosh at first because I didn't have a fenced yard. They drove all the way down from Bowie, and realized I was the best home for them even without a fence.

Some rescues go by a case to case basis and some are stricter with their rules. There are also some rescues that demand fencing for specific breeds such as Beagles that tend to follow their noses wherever they take them; which is often miles away from home!

but at the same time... some owners may be responsible if they dont have a fence!

I travel with my dogs.. and I have never had a hotel with a fence off of the room.... I have to manually walk my dogs :yay:

and even with my breeds (both) of them... I dont think I would not have them on a lead if they had to go outside. (w/o a fence)

there have been MANY dogs that dig out from a fence or jump it.. just because you have a fence DOES not mean you just just let them out there... you still have to watch your dog .. :coffee:

I have not had a fenced yard for a while now, and we walk our dog. BUT when he wants to run and play he has to do so on a lead rope - not the best for him to burn off energy. Hey maybe I should just drop him off at your house to play?

oohhh no! NO MORE DOGS AT MY HOUSE .. even just to play!

(well maybe a mali-nut) but with V in the condition he is in... calm house hold is a must!

or tied up
chained out

:yay:

(really?)

Either way, I thought it was pretty clear as to what I meant.
The official wording is "chained, tethered or otherwise tied to an inanimate object such as a tree, post or building outside of it's own enclosure".

What's the difference between being outside in a fenced yard all day and being on a rope/chain all day? Aside from maybe the tangled/choking factor?

Life happens. Telling someone you'd like to know where the new dog is going to end up when their "not even happened yet" marriage falls apart is a little loony. And thats exactly the sort of crap that pushes people towards breeders.
Thats like telling someone - you just bought a new house with a great fenced in yard - I'd love to see where that cute little puppy is when you forclose on it!! Or, you got another dog?!!But you have family history of heart disease...What if you die in 5 years?? Who is going to raise little trixie then?? HUH???

Give me a break. Poster wants a specific type of dog. Yet everyone jumps on their back as soon as they mention purchasing said dog. And you wonder why 70% of folks go to breeders - because they don't want to deal with all of the shelter loonies that pop up and tell them how and what they should do. Adopting a dog ain't all "sign here - pay the fee and its yours!!" Its as hard as adopting a kid.

I went to a breeder for my last pup !! And I'll tell you why - I TRIED to go to a shelter - not happening.
1. I inherited an English Bulldog when I married. He's a close to being senior dog. He is not fixed (the shame!!). Shelters/rescues...can't get a new dog if you have a dog that is not fixed already. (even if said new dog is male). I refuse to take this old guy and put him under to get snipped. He is too old, already has breathing problems, etc. Its not worth the risk.
2. I don't have a fenced in yard. (oh my god- I'm a horrible dog owner!!). Yet in all of my history of owning pups - I've never lost a single one. Heck, all of my pups have lived to double digits.

Sure in a perfect world, there wouldn't be a need for animal shelters. Everyone would spay/neuter. Everyone would keep their little Fido for its whole live long life no matter what life has thrown at them. But wake up folks; this aint a perfect world. Even those with the best intentions end up surrendering their animals. You can't save them all.

Now don't get me wrong - I'm pro rescue dogs all day long. I encourage many people to go to petfinder, etc. But I don't nazi them to it, if its not right for them its not right. And I can't blame them for wanting to look at breeders.
