Lake Lariat not really closed?

The lake should be closed and the gates locked. There are hardly any people there to start with and people using the playground and basketball courts can park in the other area. Leaving the Lake gates open gives a false sense of "Hey, it's ok to swim". If there are no gate guards there then close it! Signs blow away and are removed. If you want to put a boat in, you'd use the boat ramp over by the basketball courts anyway. HELLO!!!!!!!!!!

The swimming barrier floats also give the impression that swimming is allowed. They should be removed until the lake is proven to be safe for swimming.

A simple barrier of rope and stakes driven into the sand at the water line should be enough. There's no reason people can't use the beach for sunbathing, picnics, and volleyball as long as they stay out of the water.

I'm mostly concerned that someone is going to get sick and sue CRE. They'll say they never saw a sign, and CRE will lose because of that.

We can't physically stop people who ignore the warnings, but we do have to take prudent steps.

My concern is - Is the beach area being monitored by CRE? It sounds as though it is not with folks swimming in the lake. If the Lake is opened then someone needs to be at the little shack at the entrance. If the shack is closed up but the gates are open, this shouldn't be. Someone needs to be there monitoring activity. Isn't that what the beach patrols are for?

I talked to the GM a couple of minutes ago. I have to go up to the office to sign some papers for the Car Show & Yard Sale on Sunday, so I'll tell her about the roping idea... thanks....

I just love the people on this Forum... we have some really productive discussions! Thanks

I was told that a person's dog died after drinking the
lake water while out on a walk along the shore. This
was in the past few days. He said the vet diagnosed
it as "pythiosis". Not good.

How come there are no Lifeguards to keep people out
of the water (which is SUPPOSED to be posted against
swimming)?

How come the beach gets NO maintenance any more?
It looks NASTY! Trash and litter (which you KNOW is
blowing into the lake waters), grass and weeds (which
breed mosquitos, ticks and grass fleas) and the whole
area doesn't look as if it has been cleaned AT ALL this
year! I am ashamed to go there! (So I don't and I
don't bring guests either.)

Maybe that's where my neighbor got the info about the dog dying that I posted earlier today. Makes sense now.

If that is what happens to animals, I wonder what
will happen to people who swim and maybe even
swallow some of that water? Bad Stuff!!! Yikes!!

Don't understand this........Becky posted a picture of a bass caught back in early spring, and it looks very healthy, as in the water was healthy too........Trust me, if the water is poor, so are the fish living in it...

Well, there have been several 90+ degree days since
spring making it musch easier for bacteria to grow,
people have been using more lawn products since spring,
people are more acive outdoors generting more trash
and pollution along the lakeshore contributing to the
growth of more bacteria (you know they love garbage)
just look at the lake beach. No clean up, no emptying
of the trach cans, no cutting or removal of weeds and
grass at the beach, no water changing at the dam. All
of this contributes to the situation that has existed for
MANY years now at the lake and ALL of it is preventable
by the 'powers that be' (BoD ad GM) who just have to
cut the work orders and make the workers do their jobs.

This may no longer be the total solution with the lake,
but it sure won't HURT the lake and just might HELP in
the long run!

So, yes, you possible CAN see 'healthier' fish right after
the winter when the water is still relatively cool, clear
and clean, but as temps rise, activity rises and pollution
levels rise in the warmer weather, the water quality will
DECREASE and the health of things living in the lake will
DECREASE. The lake needs help.

Okay....so would you actually eat the fish that are in the lake?

And I ask Becky this same question.

With 12,000 people to get the word to, it's a rough task.
Mercury in the fish is definitely not confined to our Lake. As a matter of fact, you should only eat a limited number of fish from the Bay.

The reason we closed the lake to swimming is definitely because of the algae bloom. We tested the lake and from the test results I saw, it's safe to swim in the water that is not affected by the the bloom itself. The problem is the algae bloom ebbs and flows with the sunshine and water temps. In Florida, if a lake had the same test results, they would just put up a warning to shower after swimming. We closed it to swimming as a precaution. Better to err on the side of caution, they say.

Ecoli is not an issue according to the Health Department dept. They didn't put out a warning for ecoli... they put out the warning for algae... but like I said in another forum... Maryland has no Safety Standard for algae... so we're using those set by Florida... which is more stringent than the Deleware standards....

We're still working on permanent signage for the Mercury Warning.... the signs we put up at the lake keep disappearing on us.... the GM made the signs for the Car Show and the Yard Sale as a test... they came out pretty good don't you think?

Oh Well! You all wanted to be BOD so it is your job to get the word out and make sure ppl are safe from the amenities that are unsafe! You have security guys why isn't anyone of them at the main gate monitoring that no one swims. If you need one in front from the moment it opens to the moment is close then so be it. At least this way they are getting paid to do something! I rather them sit there and protect ppl from any harm than go around to see how many violation they can find with ppl yards and stuff. But I guess that is more important to the BOD!

Sure I'd eat it... it's beautiful... but I would rather put it back and catch it again. It looked like a very healthy fish. I've seen fish come out of the Bay that I wouldn't eat.

You got the word so I'm doing something to get the word out. I'm also working on other options too.

As far as the security issue. I just came by the lake and noticed that there is no one in the guard shack. I think the reason the gates are open is that the testing is going on.... and I know people can use the facility. We can't stop people from swimming. We can only warn them and state that it's closed.

Like I said, it's not harmful to swim in the lake according to any statute or standard set by the State. This was a board decision and we used Florida's standards because they are the most stringent. It's ok to get it on your skin as long as you shower it off. The reason we say not to swim is so people won't go submerging themselves in it. We'd rather err on the side of caution.

No.....the bass looked good; and caught the bait that she thought was threatening her bed.......

the algae does not affect fish unless it is so prevalent that the O2 levels drop significantly.

so a fish looking healthy is no indication of hte health of the lake- or the possible dangers to humans from water contact.

as for the mercury, the state has issued the warning, you do with it what you will.
