Lake Lariat not really closed?

Update????

I believe the Lake will continue to be closed until we get a sample showing something in a safer range (at least under 14 PPB).

As I have stated before this situation is more of a precaution to the young children of our community as they are more susceptible to the toxins put off by the algae. Mothers taking babies and toddlers to cool off in the water is the biggest issue for me. Those of you that believe there is no issue, that is your choice and POACRE has taken all the precautions that we possibly can but currently the Lake is closed.

If you live along the Lake or mill creek areas and want to contribute to assisting the community, one thing you could do is have your septic checked, stop using fertilizer or at least cut back in the amount that is being used. If you see or know of a problem that may be contributing to additional pollutants, contact the admin office (410) 326-3182 and report it so we can have it looked into.

The Lake is not the only body of water that has this problem. It is just one that has been highly publicized for a reason. This problem is widespread in other states and is not just CRE's problem. Everyone needs to be involved but when it comes to the lake, let the scientists, biologists and other agencies involved do what they need to come up with a safe and sensible solution that might prevent shutting the Lake down in the future.

Thank you
June

Update from June (Ladyhawk) posted on the POACRE site:

LAKE ADVISORY
Written by June Mellinger
Sunday, 29 June 2008
The lake is currently under a health advisory.

Recently a "pollen" like substance was seen floating on the surface of the lake. Samples were taken and the results came back positive for Microcystis. The Maryland Health Department and other agencies were notified.

Some strains of Microcystis may produce toxins that have been reported to result in health problems to animals that drink the water, and minor skin irritation and gastrointestinal discomfort in humans that come in contact with toxic blooms.

There have been signs posted, warning the membership on the entrance posts at Lake Lariat. Ideal conditions consist of warm dry weather but with recent cool wet weather, this bloom is unusual.

Updates will be posted here as they become available.
