Law Goes Into Effect Today

Have you heard about the measly little fines people are getting for stuff like this? Yeah, animal cruelty most often isnt enough. If there were other charges to slap on, maybe it will wake people up.
The penalty for abuse or neglect and the new law are the same:

(1) A person who violates this section is guilty of a misdemeanor and on conviction is subject to imprisonment not exceeding 90 days or a fine not exceeding $1,000 or both.

The new law did nothing to make the penalties harsher. It will do nothing to protect animals that need protection.

I have three dogs. Two are primarly indoor, only going out to potty and play the other is 120 lb lab/german shepard mix. She goes out on a 30 foot lead for a few hours at a time. She has shelter, fresh water and food and loves being outside. I never leave her out in bad weather, hot or cold. I don't leave her out when I'm not home. She comes in EVERY night. I don't have a fenced in yard (but I wish I did). So ya'll are saying my dog is abused? PLEASE!

Now accepting donations to put up a fence so I'll stop abusing my dog. Oh, and I need someone to install it too. TIA

While they carry the same penalty..... can they not be convicted of both?

Has nothing to do with keeping a dog on a lead for short periods of time. This is concerning folks that just leave their animals out there 24/7 no matter what.

No, but I will say you're an overdramatic attention whore.

Why not just increase the penalty for animal cruelty?

I do not agree with dogs being kept outside, dogs are pack animals and belong in the house (IMHO).

If you want to keep a dog outside and use it as a "guard dog", I will not agree with that either, but that is your choice, it's your dog, your responsibility. BUT to chain/tether a dog for 24 hours a day 7 days a week is CRUEL. I do not care what breed of dog it is. If it doesn't make the dog a mental basket case that cowers whenever people approach, it becomes overly protective of it's space.

You are going to say that's fine because that's what YOU want the dog to do. What happens when the neighbor kid wanders into YOUR yard and gets within grabbing range of the chained dog. THOSE are the dogs that kill. Many of the animal attacks are from dogs that are chained/tethered and a child (usually) gets too close to it's protected area. When these chained/tethered dogs get loose they are a threat as they do not know any better, that is then the owners complete and total fault.

Let me get this straight--

The owner of fido is at fault because of a free-rangeing-neighbor kid, while fido is under control??

I'ms thinks the law should address the free-ranging-neighbor kid who instigated the possible issue..

This is the reason that this law was passed. Not only can owners get charged with animal cruelty but they can also be charged under the new law.

Go get em Tiger!!

I wanna see some charges pinned to the top of this board, for all to see..
Kinda like a sexual predator web-page..

Them dog-chaining sob's won't be able to get a cup of coffee at a gas station once we're done with them..

My, what a bunch of assumptions.

I don't have a dog. I'm away too much to properly care for one. I have had dogs before and they did not get on furniture or make messes all over the floor.

You've had dogs before & they, at some point in time, stayed in the house & did not get on the furniture or make messes all over the floor..

Only if they were locked up in a cage..

Other than that-- No way from jump street..

You are either a miracle worker @ house-breaking/training dogs or you are full of what never happened on your floor w/ the dogs you have had..

I had a Llasa mix that was good about staying off furniture. Never climbed on beds, usually hid under them, and he would only jump up in a chair if you called him to sit in your lap. He did start having accidents when he was really old, but before that he was good about not going in the house. I think that poor dog was old enough to buy beer when he died . :(
