And people keep buying from them.
That's because they have too.

Everyone i speak too wants to wait for my litters and most offer deposits or payment in full up front to ensure a puppy. That's just not realistic, and it would be silly (and downright wrong) for me to accept their money without having a puppy to offer and I have to tell them that. I can't possibly meet the demand and still do it the way we do it.

And the scams..... :faint: it's awful. My puppy is FREE! Only pay 250 to ship puppy. YES people really do fall for this every day! ~ PEOPLE ~ you can pay airfare upon arrival at the airport for a dog that is shipped!

I always encourage people to consider a rescue and tell them how to evaluate temperament/suitablity on any dog they are considering, but many rescues (of all breeds) are staffed by 'fanatics' who think they're some esteemed higher power and make the 'requirements' to adopt or 'adoption fees' way out of line and as a result they miss out on many perfectly good pet homes. People end up getting discouraged and buy one any where they can even though better judgement often tells them not too, how else will they get one? So the puppy mills will continue to flourish. :frown:

Not really. People buy puppies from places that aren't considered a big bad puppy mill. They buy from the Amish..why would such Godly people be bad, right? Or they buy from a small breeder who *thinks* they have good stock..happens all the time. A lot of people out there who have no clue about buying or breeding or flat out don't give a crap.

I had put something in that post about the Amish and Mennonite, but edited it out.

At least around here their dogs are, for the most part, socialized with people/horses/other dogs/kids etc, had their shots and are wormed so someone is doing their job with education (sort of).

In PA its a cash crop and many of them raise dogs in stalls or long chicken buildings divided into stalls. It adversely effects stats for AKC shows, because the championship point system is based on numbers of dogs registered with the AKC by region, not by numbers of dogs actually shown.

You're right most people put more thought into purchasing a washer than researching a breed or breeder of a dog that will live in the house with you for (hopefully) 10+ years and interact with the family on a daily basis.

Being that around here, I see dogs tied to trees, or left in filthy pens 24/7/365 very very very often, I think quite often it's the 'don't give a crap'.

Many people have told me that they bought puppies from the Amish because they felt sorry for them...especially at the farmers market. I deal with animal folks 7 days a week and that is the most common reason I hear.

Couple of "regulars" adopted pups w/ treatable problems- costly- but doable.
These are the fortunate ones.

I know of one that was dumped along the side of the road recently. :frown:

A friend took the little cutie in, paid for the 5 days in intensive care, then fed him another couple of weeks on lamb and rice jarred infant food until his intestines could handle something else and now he's going to be fine. :yay:
