Loveville Produce Auction

I do.

Call me crazy, but I still bought more of 'em.

I'm really digging this canning process, so I'll just toss 'em into a jar so that come wintertime, I'll have a little bit of homemade sunshine ready for me to use.

Tomato sauce, tomato puree, tomato sauce with jalepano, spicy spaghetti sauce, regular spaghetti sauce, homemade salsa.

I LOVE fresh produce!

Make some Tomato JUICE.. I LOOOOVE Tomato Juice..

Got back recent from the Market, and here is my haul:

12 pints of HUGE blackberries
1 1/2 bushel of pickling cucumbers
3 dozen ears of sweet corn
1 bushel hot peppers
3 pints of figs
1 flat of zucchini
50 lbs of tomatoes
1 quart green beans

I already have my jars sterilizing for making bread and butter AND dill pickles. Not sure what I'll tackle afterwards.

Seriously, that place is ridiculously fun.

:bann:
Are you going to make fermented pickles or quick ones?

Going to try to ferment some again.

The first ones didn't come out too good, but I tried my luck at using my own seasoning.. NOW I have real pickle seasoning..

I like crispy SOUR pickles, so we'll see how it goes.

Oh and tomato juice does NOT have celery in it.. NONE!!

I thought you already had those coming out of your ear!

It's something about the auction, makes you want to bid and get stuff. The produce is beautiful and it's so cheap that you hate to let someone else get that flat of 15 perfect tomatoes for $3. The "I want" factor kicks in and that's all she wrote.

Do they sell jalapeno peppers there ?....I would definitely pickle a bushel.

Yes, and they had those big huge stuffing kind, too. It's not the same goods every time - keep in mind it's an auction where farmer's are selling off their produce, so it's whatever they've brought in.

I KNEW I should have taken the day off!

You girls had all the fun without me :(

Rose, what say we go on Friday?

Try to avoid Fridays -- that's when the dealers show up to buy for their stands for the weekend and prices are usually a lot higher. Always depends on the day and who shows up for what though!!

I got 10 flats of tomatoes for $1 apiece last Wed. Beautiful ones!! Ate some, canned the rest in various ways. My garden did not fair well this year so I have been there to get my veggies for canning quite a bit this year!

Can someone tell me when they are going next so I can meet up with them?

This seems like one of those situations where my social anxiety would come into play. :jameo: I need to go with a grown-up :yay:

So how do I do it? What do I do? :bann:

You have to send us your Credit Card info with the security code to pre-register or you won't be able to bid..

Include mailing address, Mother's Maiden name, and your bank account routing numer, account number and password.. (as a back up if there is a fault with the Credit Card system on the day of the auction)...

Oh, and at least a $1000 deposit into my PayPal account prior to the auction... (for liability protection for you)..

You show up on sale day and the nice lady in the office inside will take your information (Name, address, phone) and give you an auction number. She will give you a brief rundown of how things work if you ask and answer any questions. I think you have to have a photo ID to register the first time. The auction part goes pretty fast and sometimes he is hard to understand so watch for a little while to get the idea of how things work. It's not difficult once you get the idea. Some lots are all as one - sometimes they will break up the lots, but you have to listen carefully to understand what the auctioneer is doing with each lot and what you are actually bidding on.

It's a lot of fun and you can get some really great deals!! There are fun people to talk to as well and there are some that go over there all the time that love to help out the "newbies"!!

Good luck!!

Some lots are all as one - sometimes they will break up the lots, but you have to listen carefully to understand what the auctioneer is doing with each lot and what you are actually bidding on.

More on this:

Let's say there is a flat of 12 pints of blueberries up for auction. The price you are bidding is per pint, not per flat. So if you win with a bid of $1, you will be paying $12 - $1 per pint.

There might also be a lot of 3 flats of, say, squash. You are bidding per flat, and if you win you can take two or all three - the auctioneer will specify. If you only take two, the last person bidding against you will be offered the other flat for the price you won.

The auctioneer starts high - "fi' dollar, fi' dolla bill" for a small watermelon, for example. So wait until he goes down or someone else starts the bid before you jump in.

And like Jedi said, don't be afraid to ask questions because the people there are very nice and happy to help.
