I am trying the low carb diet. My Doc said i am IR so i need to watch my carb and sugar intake. I am a little confused about the net carbs and total carbs. On different websites of low carb products it will show a product having a net carb of 2 but as i read more the total carb was like 14. Doesn't seem low carb to me. Can anyone point me in the right direction. Thanks!

net carbs are the carbs MINUS the fiber and in those "specialty" products they also deduct sugar alcohols because they have a negligable impact on your BS. I would stay away from them though..those sugar alcohols are umm...a pain in the rear. To put it nicely.

Atkins website has a really good "acceptable foods list" designed for people in phase one of their program..but it is also good as a list to consult for very low carb choices

Since my wife and I are supposed to maintain a high-protein/low-carb diet permanently - not that I always do - our doctor instructs us that net carbs are simply a gimmick. You count carbs, period. Your body isn't cutting you slack because you ate fiber and if you want to lose weight, you can't tank up on carbs thinking that fiber's going to undo it all for you.

Larry and I are low-carbing it. He's an enthusiastic convert and will most likely be on here shortly to tell you how much better he feels.

It encourages fiber intake. And generally, higher fiber carbs are ones that are complex, and whole grain, rather than the terrible for you one..like sugar, white flour, etc. I wouldn't call it a "gimmick" per se...as in general it will only cut off a few extra carbs from any given item.

While not exactly low carb, another good one is the South Beach Diet. One of it's goals is to change the type of carbs you eat, like complex vs simple carbs and sticking to whole grains.

Well, especially for gastric bypass patients like ourselves, carbs are carbs - they still have the same caloric value and they still produce the same effect on us. Total carbs then, is still what counts, since the caloric value is not offset by anything. I do think it's gimmicky, and I haven't met a nutritionist who gives it any credence.

Right. Calories in, calories out. When talking about a low carb diet, though, you have to take into account its afffect on blood sugar. Fiber isn't broken down the same way in the body as most carbs (natural fiber that is) so it doesn't have the same impact on blood sugar..which matters to say, diabetics or those trying to get into or stay in ketosis. SO as far as calories or weight loss when not part of a low carb diet..no they don't matter. But to low carbers they do indeed have a minimal impact on the foods allowed for a given day.

I have arrived.

OK, here's the deal; low carb is the be all end all of the universe and if you don't do it, you are dumb.

Now, if you are an athlete, I imagine you need more carbs and will burn them and fat and everything else you consume and it's not as big a deal. Not ready to weigh in on that one just yet.

My old diet; high carb cereal for breakfast and/or bagel (more carbs) plus blueberries, plus banana (more carbs) black coffee.

Lunch; typically a meat (special of the day at the local place) plus potatoes/mac n cheese, a green veggie, a roll, no butter ( ) and some dessert thing, typically a pack of peanut M & M's. Diet drink. Or a cold sub and too many potato chips and M & M's.

Dinner; Whatever. Go out, meat, carbs, maybe dessert, maybe a few brews. Pasta, pasta, pasta.

For me, Regular Joe, late 40's pretty active life style, food loving whore, beer drinker, carb junkie, it's been a huge net plus to my life BUT it's not even a week yet. So, we'll see.

Now here's what I like, the net improvement in my life; No after meal crash. No stuffed feeling. This has been replaced with, well, nothingness. I get right back to whatever I was doing at the same pace and intensity and concentration level as before I stopped to eat. And here is where it gets more better; no more shaky, pranging, distracting hunger that the heavy carb diet gave me.

Vrai told me that it wouldn't be long and my craving for carbs would be gone. It took a day. She has me doing low carb. We tried no carb years ago and it was misery, constant craving for chips and pasta and bread. Now, we walked through the grocery store and I hadn't eaten in probably five hours or so and, normally, she'd be yelling at me opening bags of chips before we'd paid for them. At minimum, I would "Homer" them walking past "mmmm...potato chips..." Nothing. Couldn't have cared less. That is still going strong.

Went shopping today and I am now all about the carb count. Worst thing I have is a cereal with 20 carbs and tortilla chips for salsa that are 14 (or 17?).

I am just satisfied now, not gorging and good to go for hours and hours. I just ate lunch with nothing but coffee this morning and, pre low carb, I'd have killed someone by now and used their wallet to buy chips. As it is, I was hungry but, not insane about it. Yesterday, I went from 9 am until 6pm between meals. I just feel better, calmer. More focused and no crashing and bursting up and down.

If I don't lose a pound this is more better. Way more.

Anything you wanna know just ask Vrai; she's been spot on about the when, why's and how's of this.

Hmmmm. I am low carb, and I also get hiccups badly. Usually, I just have one or two loud hiccups....not a whole string of 'em.

I just figured that I got my hiccups from eating too quicky.

So far i am doing good. The only things i crave is my chinese and french fries. I did have some french fries but i ate the serving size and not a bit more. I made nachos last night and the total of carbs was like 21. Thats with seasoned chicken, salsa, cheese, onions, and peppers. Oh and the chips too. Total calories were about 360. I could cut it done if i had better cheese. In fact it taste ok with out the cheese. Mrs. Dash is my best friend. Using that seasoning is a great way to cut the salt down too!
