1) Why the heck live in Loudon County and commute to DC?
2) Why the heck live in Southern Maryland and commute to DC?

Can't you move somewhere closer, or at least somewhere where you have access to the Metro or the VRE? ANYTHING that involves public transportation (and I'm not talking a bus) would be better than sitting in 1 1/2-3 hours' worth of traffic each way.

I moved into Loudoun because I lived there 10 years ago and was familiar with the area, plus, my parent's and 3 sets of cousins live in the same development that I moved into and that's nice...

I would rather live in Southern MD because I would enjoy my weekend much more being on the Bay and I would like my kids to grow up in more of a rural setting (relatively) where they can enjoy the woods and water.

I didn't and am not moving closer in because I can't stand the wall-to-wall concrete, the prices for housing go higher the closer in you get, plus, I don't want my kids going to the schools in the close in areas. I know I will be sacrificing alot of time commuting, but if my family has a better quality of life, I don't mind it at all. I can do an hour and a half standing on my head! The occassional long delays don't really bother me all that much, either. I'm pretty mellow that way.

What kills me is the time it takes to commute even if you live closer in. I learned that lesson first hand. NAVSEA was in Crystal City, took me between an hour and an hour and a half to get to work from Waldorf (mind you I had to cross the WW). I decided I'd be better off and save a good amount on gas and time. I moved to South Alexandria. 10 miles door to door straight up Rt 1. It still took me an hour to get to work! Then let's try the metro, drive to the Metro, catch the train then walk to your building; still took damn near an hour and cost more then driving/parking. Not to mention my car got broken into at the Metro Station. My rent was just under $1k a month and I was totally pushing my luck with that. There was no way I could have lived in Crystal City or Old Town. I'd of paid double that. That was 6 years ago. I can only imagine the price now! :faint:

See.... I consider that a BONUS. As long as there is a grocery store, a gas station, and a hardware store... And I guess a bar or liquor store.... I'm fine!

In DC you and your mind can be furthest from the bridge but if something jumps off it can affect you even from miles away.

Nope... Anacostia Naval Annex. It's connected with Bolling AFB. It's on the MD side of the Anacostia river along 295/South Capitol Street. It's close to the Anacostia Metro Stop...
You could still take the bus in, but you'd have to move to other side of the Patuxent - say, Charlotte Hall or Mechanicsville. The 903 goes to Suitland (the bus I take) and you could take the Metro the rest of the way (because the stop in Suitland is RIGHT at the Suitland Metro. There's lot of folks who work at the Washington Navy Yard on that bus (yes I know it's not the same place).

In any case, Uncle Sam gives out Metro Checks for commuters. Your commute would be at least as long, but it would cost you almost nothing. For me, it's a good time to read or nap.

Crystal City to Chinatown = 15 minutes with traffic
Old Town to Chinatown = 1/2 an hour TOPS with traffic
Great Mills to Crystal City (when I worked there) = 2-3 hours

Oh and by the way...

$1K a month in Crystal City????? :lmao: I WISH!

Not eastern Loudoun. Western Loudoun is mostly farms, although that is changing. Loudoun has been the fastest growing county in the nation for a few years now, and I believe it is now home to the most Fortune 500 Companies or something like that.... The Dulles Corridor is the new Silicon Valley. It is full of super-rich people.

I paid $1k to live in the ghetto part of Fairfax County, Alexandria (again 6 years ago). I $hit you not 10 miles door to door (to Crystal City) and it took me an hour to drive it.

No crud. Moving back here didn't seem like a bad option at the time. I had the option to buy the condo I rented for.... get this..... $60k. :banghead: Why oh why didn't I do it. Crappy neighborhood or not I'd of made a killing on the sale after a couple years.

Nah, the condo itself was nice. The hood was kinda scarey. I guess not much worse then living in the heights though! :lmao:

Leaving Saint Leonard in the morning anywhere from 6am to 7 am to go to Shootland takes me no more then an hour and 15 minutes usually. Now granted I do tend to drive like a bat out of hell every once and a while and a radar detector is your friend. I made it to prince frederick last night from here in shootland in about 45 minutes with speeding down the road too bad and that was leaving at 5:30... Problem is that when you get a couple miles north of here it gets worse.

You have not lied because the houses in DC that were going for $120K (and I was like I aint living in Frederick Douglass's birth home) are now going for $300K. Yes, if we had done that and then moved here.
