I have no idea what Mel did or didn't say-what I have read is:

A contrite Mel Gibson has admitted to being an alcoholic and apologised for "being completely out of control" when arrested near his multi-million dollar Malibu mansion.

Gibson, the Australian-raised two-time Oscar winner, was pulled over by Los Angeles County Sheriffs after his 2006 Lexus LS430 was clocked at 140kph, well over the 72kph (45mph) speed limit.

Sheriffs alleged he recorded a 0.12 per cent blood-alcohol reading.

California's legal limit is 0.08.

Gibson, 50, admitted he had said "things to" the arresting sheriff deputy "which are despicable" and had admitted to drinking before he was pulled over.

"After drinking alcohol on Thursday night, I did a number of things that were very wrong and for which I am ashamed," Gibson said in a statement released to the media.

"I drove a car when I should not have, and was stopped by the LA County sheriffs.

"The arresting officer was just doing his job and I feel fortunate that I was apprehended before I caused injury to any other person.

"I acted like a person completely out of control when I was arrested, and said things that I do not believe to be true and which are despicable. I am deeply ashamed of everything I said and I apologise to anyone who I have offended."

"I have battled the disease of alcoholism for all of my adult life and profoundly regret my horrific relapse," he said.

"I apologise for any behaviour unbecoming of me in my inebriated state and have already taken necessary steps to ensure my return to health."

Sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore would not divulge what Gibson said to the arresting deputy.

The actor, however, felt it was so severe he needed to apologise.

"I take this opportunity to apologise to the deputies involved for my belligerent behaviour," the staunchly Catholic Gibson, who has seven children with wife Robyn, said.

"They have always been there for me in my community and indeed probably saved me from myself. I disgraced myself and my family with my behaviour and for that I am truly sorry."

More on Mel-

The entertainment news Website, citing, in part, a report filed by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputy who took Gibson into custody, charges the actor-director, only two years past criticism that his film The Passion of the Christ set back Christian-Jewish relations, spouted anti-Semitic remarks, addressed a female deputy as "sugar t-ts," tried to evade arrest, got rough with a telephone and threatened to urinate in his jailhouse holding cell.

"My life is f--ked," the Mad Max star said, more than once, per TMZ.com, after being pulled over by a sheriff's deputy early Friday morning on Pacific Coast Highway.

According to the sheriff's department, Gibson was flagged for speeding in 2006 Lexus sedan--allegedly going about 80 mph in a 45-mph zone. A sobriety test revealed Gibson's blood-alcohol level to be 0.12, exceeding California's 0.08 legal limit, the department said.

Gibson was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, booked at the sheriff's Malibu/Lost Hills Station, and, after posting $5,000 bail, released from custody at about 10 a.m. Friday, online records show.

When asked Friday afternoon if Gibson gave deputies any trouble, sheriff's department spokesman Steve Whitmore said no. Gibson's own apology--not to mention the TMZ.com report--says otherwise.

"I acted like a person completely out of control when I was arrested and said things I do not believe to be true and which are despicable," Gibson said in a statement.

According to TMZ.com, Gibson called the arresting deputy a "motherf---ker," whom he was going to "f--k" on account of "he [Gibson] 'owns Malibu' and will spend all of his money to 'get even' with me [the deputy]."

Later, the Website reported, Gibson ranted about the "f--king Jews," who "are responsible for all the wars in the world," and asked the deputy, "Are you a Jew?" (Gibson, who helped build a Catholic church in Malibu, is not.)

A request by the deputy for Gibson to get inside the patrol car was met with a dash by the actor back to his Lexus. Or, as the report posted on TMZ.com put it: "Gibson attempted to escape arrest."

At the Malibu/Lost Hills Station, the Website reported, Gibson remained ornery, demanding a trip to the bathroom, and banging a telephone when he had trouble making a call.

"I disgraced myself and my family with my behavior and for that I am truly sorry," Gibson said Saturday. "I have battled with the disease of alcoholism for all of my adult life and profoundly regret my horrific relapse."

Gibson, 50, previously was arrested for drunken driving in 1984 in Toronto. By 1991, he later told ABC News, he was so steeped in addiction that he considered jumping out a window.

During the promotion for his self-financed Biblical epic, 2004's The Passion of the Christ, Gibson often recounted how religion had helped him beat his demons.

The Passion of the Christ, which Gibson wrote and directed, was the biggest box-office hit of the star's career, a favorite of evangelical audiences, and a target of Jewish leaders who feared its portrayal of Jesus' final hours would incite anti-Semitic violence. Gibson maintained that neither he, nor his film, was anti-Semitic.

What else are you trying to show, here?

Nothing other than what has been put out there...
I'm sure SOME of us have done worse and said worse!
It's a blessing someone wasn't hurt or killed, that's the insidious side of alcoholism-some people do stupid, dangerous stuff while drinking.
This isn't a peeing contest Kerad... :yay:

Well, yeah...unfortuately DUI's happen all the time..and usually the rich and famous get by with 'em. True.

I'm just not going to be all "pissed off" at Mel Gibson all of a sudden when he got nabbed with one. Maybe it's not "politically correct" of me to not ditch 'em like that...but the guy's a human being, etc. I know we're all "supposed to" be pissed off at him and pretend he's the worst thing to walk the earth...but I'm not wired that way. Thankfully noone got hurt. Work it from there. I expect him to have the same punishment that I would have..nothing more...nothing less.

Maybe I'm the lucky one: Able to seperate political beliefs form their jobs. Tom Cruise, the Scientologist? Prolly nuts. Tom Cruise, the actor. Good.
Tom Cruise movies are good, but Cruise himself is embarrassing with his intense stare and extreme close-ups. You can tell he's got an ego the size of the Grand Canyon.

And, Lilypad, I LOATHE Billy Jack. I can't stand one-dimensional movies where the good guys are completely virtuous and the bad guys are unrealistically vicious.

I'm not PO'd at Mel either but, he does and has had a problem-for years-he's very forthcoming in talking about it.
IMHO-he's gonna punish himself more than the justice system will!
Peace be with you Kerad

The interesting thing about Tom Cruise is (my younger sister loves him...so I have had to talk about him for years) that he was notorious for being so secretive. He never got off script in interviews...talked about his movies and nothing else. Blockbuster after blockbuster...he wouldn't say crap about anything but his movies.

Then..all of a sudden, it's like he blew a fuze...and totally flipped the other way. Like the dam burst..and couldn't control himself. Maybe he;s one of "those" guys. He's so guarded and controlled..that someday the dam bursts...and he's gushing out of control.

I admit...I'm a Mel Gibson fan. Liked the movies he's been in..and produced. I can't fault him for a DUI, as I could have easily been pulled over for a few of them in my lifetime.

Sucks when the people you look up to have the same flaws that you do.

Eh.

.

My sister has had a habit of pointing out that in EVERY Tom Cruise trailer..there's a scene where he's sprinting full speed. She claims he's done it since "The Firm". I cannot deny this..though I think the roles he takes makes him have to run at full speed from something. Everybody keeps trying to shoot him or blow him up.

I'd be a sprinting motherfrakker too! It's prolly helps him pass those Dienetics physicals as well....

I agree. I thought Mission: Impossible III was an entertaining, well-crafted action film (saw it twice in theatres even), but there were moments where you could tell Tom Cruise, who has close-to-100% creative control of the M:I franchise, was creating a big-budget shrine to himself. I can't imagine director J.J. Abrams 'just decided' to insert close-ups of sweat dripping down his arm, over pumped muscles. I do, however, find it very easy to buy Cruise told the studio they needed to ensure shots of his bulging muscles were in the film. It sounds superficial, but I can see him doing it.

Cruise also needs to accept he can't always be the one and only attraction to a film. He needs to follow George Clooney's lead. He can be the A-list, handsome star, but he should also be able to do an ensemble film or do a non-action hero, non-romantic role. Cruise seems to demand he play the highest-profile roles and be the center of the publicity storm. Before War Of The Worlds came out, many articles barely mentioned director Steven Spielberg or co-stars Dakota Fanning and Tim Robbins. Hell, many barely mention the alien invasion concept! It was just "Tom Cruise, Tom Cruise, Tom Cruise." If he doesn't watch it, this type of oversaturation will destroy his career (M:i-III's disappointing box office gross showed damage has already happened).

I agree. Cruise is getting a bit long in the tooth for his cocky action hero act. By the time you hit your 40's (which Cruise has) people expect you to have a grip on your attitude and at least some semblance of maturity.

I can't see him gracefully accepting an ensemble part. He is TOM CRUISE and literally sucks the air out of any movie he does.

Tom Cruise also has never made a movie promoting Scientology.

Of course, I didn't hate The Passion Of The Christ because it dealt with Jesus. I hated and was offended by it because it's one of the most blatantly anti-Semitic films I've ever seen. Many of my relatives are Jewish and I just couldn't stand how Gibson's film portrayed people of the Jewish faith in such a hateful, negative way. I hear when he was arrested on DUI charges he yelled hateful comments about Jewish people. Not surprised. I guess the intoxication brought all the hate to the surface.

Oh come on. Thats like saying a movie about gladitators where they feed Christians to lions is anti-Itallian or a film about slaves treated poorly in the south before the civil was is anti-white.

I have never seen the Passion of the Christ and I dont plan to because I don't care for any movies about a religion and I absolutely lothe movies with subtitles. I live in America I want to see my movies in English.

Curious about what is so anti-Semitic about Passion of the Christ? That's how the story *goes*.

Should they have made Jesus' executioners white male oil moguls?

Mel - always upfront about the alcoholism. Still an extremely charismatic person. I'd do him.

Tom - yes he's been really wild in the last 2 years. Ego? No doubt about it and he shares that with a huge part of Hollywood. Annoying? Sure. But I just saw Jerry McGuire again and in particular the part where he gets out of bed and dons his undies. Great great thighs
