I have no idea what Mel did or didn't say-what I have read is:
A contrite Mel Gibson has admitted to being an alcoholic and apologised for "being completely out of control" when arrested near his multi-million dollar Malibu mansion.
Gibson, the Australian-raised two-time Oscar winner, was pulled over by Los Angeles County Sheriffs after his 2006 Lexus LS430 was clocked at 140kph, well over the 72kph (45mph) speed limit.
Sheriffs alleged he recorded a 0.12 per cent blood-alcohol reading.
California's legal limit is 0.08.
Gibson, 50, admitted he had said "things to" the arresting sheriff deputy "which are despicable" and had admitted to drinking before he was pulled over.
"After drinking alcohol on Thursday night, I did a number of things that were very wrong and for which I am ashamed," Gibson said in a statement released to the media.
"I drove a car when I should not have, and was stopped by the LA County sheriffs.
"The arresting officer was just doing his job and I feel fortunate that I was apprehended before I caused injury to any other person.
"I acted like a person completely out of control when I was arrested, and said things that I do not believe to be true and which are despicable. I am deeply ashamed of everything I said and I apologise to anyone who I have offended."
"I have battled the disease of alcoholism for all of my adult life and profoundly regret my horrific relapse," he said.
"I apologise for any behaviour unbecoming of me in my inebriated state and have already taken necessary steps to ensure my return to health."
Sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore would not divulge what Gibson said to the arresting deputy.
The actor, however, felt it was so severe he needed to apologise.
"I take this opportunity to apologise to the deputies involved for my belligerent behaviour," the staunchly Catholic Gibson, who has seven children with wife Robyn, said.
"They have always been there for me in my community and indeed probably saved me from myself. I disgraced myself and my family with my behaviour and for that I am truly sorry."
