McKay's

Word on the street is that a legit local businessman is buying Hollywood and Charlotte Hall locations. Obviously, it will take some time and money to bring them up to par. All of the Charlotte Hall freezer cases need to be replaced. Probably should gut the place, set off a gazillion roach bombs and start over.

NASTY

My son worked at the one in CH about 10+ years ago and was in the dairy section - stocking - rotating - cleaning, blah blah blah. I saw so many reviews talking about how that store had drastically improved in this area but when he left, the reviews about expired food on the shelves returned. As a mom, I smiled because I knew why it improved and why it went bad.

It really is sad, because I used to drive from Waldorf to McKay's in CH decades ago (before moving to this area) just to shop. They always had workers at the deli, a packed seafood section... just nice!

Now, it reminds me of a neglected K-mart bathroom. :(

Ive been in Charlotte Hall for 44 years now, and there was nothing when we moved there, only the IGA where Hooks and Hangers is now. When the McKays opened around 1982/83 it was a really big thing for CH. Their grand opening prize's were for 2 weeks they drew a name each day for a $100 gift certificate and on the final day of the give away they drew one name for a $1,000 certificate to use for buying groceries. It was a Sunday morning when we received a phone call from Tommy McKay telling us we were the grand prize winners. ($1,000 went a long ways back then). My better half screamed so loud I thought she had seen a snake in the house. It is sad to see them closing (after 40yrs) and still to this day when I have been in the store Tommy has always remembered us and always stops and chats with us.
Just what Charlotte Hall needs another possible eyesore with a big empty store, we already have a nasty looking lot where Wentworth was hopefully now that Royal Farms has been approved the new owners will soon clear that lot. Then there is the lot where the new McKays was suppose to go, that place needs to be cleared and then there is the Farmers Market that place really needs a facelift.

It was a big thing. I remember when it was being built and how excited I was. I didn't have to drive forever to grocery shop or stop in Waldorf on the way home from work. Coming from PG, I couldn't believe you could buy beer while grocery shopping. I won a ham and a turkey. They treated their customers good too. The owners and managers would take your groceries out when the clerks were super busy. I'm sorry they're all closing. One more thing I'll add to my list of what I'll miss is their steamed shrimp. The seasoning was great so good.

Me too! The first time I ever had steamed shrimp was from McKay's when I was in high school. We lived in Baden and a friend of mine's boyfriend lived in Charlotte Hall and brought us some. I was hooked!

Just sneakin' around....
I got some shrimp from McKays that stunk up my fridge to high heaven. The smell got into anything porous, egg cartons, paper labels, etc... Took weeks to get rid of the awful smell. Never bought seafood from them again.

Honestly, I didn't do weekly shopping there much anymore. The prices were too steep. I would go from time to time to get the things you couldn't get elsewhere (my list lol). I've going to Food Lion since it's close to me. There are things I've learned not to buy there.

Didn't they take over the Shopper's in Waldorf? What's become of that?

Yes they did, at the same time as the one at San Souz(sp). It didn't last a year, was right when the pandemic really started. Too many other grocery stores in Waldorf area. Right behind that Shoppers in Waldorf in the woods is one of the largest homeless camps in Waldorf. Homeless folks would always hangout right by the store on the corner of the shopping center making it a kind of undesirable place to go into the store.

They bought the Shoppers in San Souci and the one in Waldorf from UNFI, which is a big food wholesaler that owned the Shoppers brand. They renamed the one in San Souci to McKays, but let the one in Waldorf be called Shoppers because the McKays brand was not well known up there. I don't think the Waldorf store lasted but a few months. Shoppers was known as a cheap store and McKays was anything but.
