MD approves yapping on Cell Phone Ban when driving

It is not the Yapping, for most, but taking your eyes off of the road to dial you call ..... but it all boils down to distracted driving ....

It bears repeating; a cell conversation becomes a direct link to the activity of the gas and brake pedals.

I'm shocked that some of you would endanger the lives of others simply because you can't even drive your car without yapping on the phone. There is no reason on earth why someone NEEDS to talk on the phone while driving. You can pull over or wait until you get to your destination.

It's selfish cellphone yappers that cause accidents and kill people. If there were a cellphone-free road that the rest of us could drive on to be safe from you, it would be one thing.

:drama:

HA HA!!!! :killingme :roflmao:

I bet reading this made your day, didn't it? :jet:

Would those of you that SUPPORT the cell ban also support a ban on drivers eating in a car? Or a law making it illegal for a driver to mess with the radio?

What would you say if a first draft of legislation of this kind was in works right now?

I heard on 98.3 this morning that there's some idiot doctor saying the internet and cell phones are addicting; therefore, a disease. While, ridiculous to ponder, and I agree with T-bone that it downplays real illness, this goes to show how much people are obsessed with their stupid phones.

I decided to look up some statistics. Did you know that there were no accidents in all of Maryland prior to the invention of cell phones? That's right. And the accident rates and fatality rates have climbed as cell phones have become more prevelant.

Every crash, even the drunk driving ones, are directly caused by cell phone use.

This law makes perfect sense now!

I am OUTRAGED!!!! What next? No playing with the stereo while driving, huh? No more eating or drinking? No more reading the newspaper? No personal grooming? Where are MY rights? How about smoking, hmm???

FASCISTS!

:yeahthat: How dare the law assume cars were designed for driving.

I'd support it. Not only is eating while driving distracting, but it's also a pain in the butt. I don't do it just because it's too much trouble. If I want to eat, I stop.

As far as the radio, that's why most of the new vehicles have steering wheel mounted controls, same concept as a hands free device, and now with the advent of the Microsoft system in Fords (I think it's fords) all the radio and cell functions are integrated into voice commands.

For those who simply can't multitask talking and driving at the same time, well, maybe you shouldn't be on the road to begin with.

According to Human Factors and Ergonomics Society the journal's publisher claims phone distraction causes 2,600 deaths and 330,000 injuries in the United States every year.

Human Factors and Ergonomics Society : Hands-On or Hands-Free, Using a Cell Phone While Driving Is Not Safe, Researchers Find

Cell phone conversations alone, without dialing or answering, change the way drivers see the world and make them more likely to miss traffic signs and other important information (see the special section papers by McPhee, Scialfa, Dennis, Ho, and Caird and by Atchley and Dressel).

:yay:

How is hands-free any different than talking to a passenger?

If you've ever had a wife as a passenger, you'd know that she'd never let anything get by.... you'd get a constant update on road conditions even if you weren't looking at the road..... So, it's actually better than talking on the phone with hands free.

You have no idea :roflmao:

When they did the smoking ban, I said just wait until they want to ban something from you, then maybe you'll see what the problem is with letting government have too much power. And the smoke Nazis said, "That will NEVER happen because I NEVER do anything that's bad enough to EVER get banned!"

HA HA!!!! :lmao:

Totally agree! I think the term for increasing government power was termed "creeping incrementalism".

Feels good now the shoe is on the other foot!

No, because your distraction is present.
Talking on a cell causes a distraction with someone that's not in your presence and your thoughts are diverted away from your current location.
As an example, I was in blockbuster and some guy walks by talking on his cell, he says "Excuse us". Not me, but "us". A portion of his concentration was on a person not present, but his mind was placing her there.

FYI - There is NO TALKIN ON A CELL PHONE BAN IN MD

I don't like to use my handset while driving. If my daughter is in the car I'll make her answer. I don't understand how anyone can yak away about the days events while driving. I've never had more than a 30 second "what exit should I take?" or "I'm about 10 minutes away-meet us at the ticket booth" type convos while behind the wheel.

I think there should be a law against throwing cigarette butts out the window. It's littering, it could start a brush fire when conditions are dry, and I almost ran of the road one time when one flew back in thru my back window and down the back of my shirt. I think that was about 1 week before I quit.

The Article said:
"It's just one of those bills, like the seat belt law, that just takes time," Lennett said.
That's right, it takes time to enact nanny legislation to protect stupid people from themselves. If this law was actually necessary it wouldn't take time.
The Article said:
During the debate Tuesday, senators cited the ban's success in neighboring Washington, D.C., and argued the ban will be enough to get people off the phone while driving.

"In Washington, D.C., we know that driving on a cell phone will get you a ticket, and people have stopped doing it," said Sen. Catherine Pugh, D-Baltimore.
Notice how it is a "success" because "people have stopped doing it."

Is it suddenly safe to drive in DC? Has the accident rate in DC suddenly dropped due to the ban? How about any city or state with a ban?

Obviously not, or they would be touting the statistics instead of anecdotal observations.

If they came out with actual hard data that shows a marked decrease in accident rates, it would be impossible to fight a ban. The data just isn't there.
