Awesome food, was there Friday for the WW Project fundraiser. Good service, servers always coming around with samples. Excellent brisket, fast service and prices aren't over the top. Big, big brisket sandwich, big order of hand cut fries and a drink for $10. No worse than Five Guys or other places. Plus our entire dinner tab went to WW.

They also brought food to the Navy recruiters office during the monthly delayed entry meeting for incoming recruits.

Met Will, the co-operator that came from Outback, awesome guy with a great staff. We will be back!!

I cannot in good conscience eat at a chain restaurant when a comparable restaurant owned by a human is 2 miles away, regardless of how many marketing gimmicks they engage in.

Smokey Joe's will still be seeing me.

Right...because this chain (three restuarants) who give 10% of their profits to the wounded warriors and honor our country each day by stopping and singing the National Anthem and has no freezer or microwave can't possibly be as good as smokey joes...lol

Is the Smokey Joe's near you the same owners as the one in Chesapeake Beach?

So, a place owned by slightly more successful actual humans (two or three of them) is a no go? By that same token, I should never eat at Fiesta Cafe again, I should only frequent Salsas, since Fiestas has two locations and is therefore an evil chain?

Don't get me wrong, I wont stop going to SJs simply because a new place opened up and does good things (a gimmick that helps fund worthy causes isn't a gimmick, IMHO), and paying respect to the folks who give of themselves for others isn't a gimmick either, at least to me. But I wont refuse to eat at the new place solely because the guys who operate learned to be successful working for corporations and have translated that into being successful individually. Being successful is a good thing, and places that are successful get that way by being good, generally speaking.

Not to mention that the owner of this Mission BBQ is a person who has lived in St. Mary's County for over 30 years, and has hired at least 30 people.

It's not about being "good", it's about supporting small local businesses and encouraging entrepreneurs.

Apparently you didn't see OldHillcrestGuy's post:
They have a place in Pa. and plan to open 3 more place this year, including the one here in St Marys and something like 40 more locations in coming years nationwide.

That would be your basic chain restaurant, and I rarely eat at chains.

So the local guy who owns this Mission BBQ is not an entrepreneur? What is he? The 30+ people he hired have no value because the business they work at isn't a business that started in here? What about Smokey Joe opening another restaurant? Do you stop eating there once they become successful? Your logic escapes me.

Two local businesses does not equal a chain. 40+ businesses spread out over multiple states - yep, that would be a chain alright.

I am amused at how defensive some of you are getting because I choose not to patronize chain restaurants. Did I say *you* shouldn't eat there? No. No, I did not.

Perhaps you can petition your Congresscritter to force people to eat where you eat?

Note that the + 40 locations is only the expressed wish of the founders, not reality. Right now I think it's three locations. If SJs expressed a wish to open two more stores, and maybe 50 in the next five years, would you stop going?

Chain stores are retail outlets that share a brand and central management, and usually have standardized business methods and practices. Before considered a chain, stores must meet a litmus test; it must have more than 10 units under the same brand and have a central headquarters, otherwise it offers franchise contracts or is publicly traded.([1])These characteristics also apply to chain restaurants and some service-oriented chain businesses. In retail, dining and many service categories, chain businesses have come to dominate the market in many parts of the world. A franchise retail establishment is one form of chain store.

How about if you eat where you want and deign to allow me to eat where I want?

Go right ahead, we were only pointing out that your stated reason didnt stand up. If you had said, "I'm eating at SJs cause I want to", nobody would have said a word. But you made it a case of big chain vs little guy, and we pointed out that that argument didn't hold water.
