Hmmm, looks like the parts for the chimney would cost about $400 or so, given a basement install. Less out in the sunroom, but plumbing the duct to the existing heat pump system becomes more tricky.

That's pretty cool. Now hubbys wondering if we should replace ours, lol. Have no idea how old it is, probably 1980 something. It definitely works but couple areas around the pipe you can see the fire through a crack. Probably losing some heat at the places its soldered /connected together.

Not bad

1600 sq ft townhouse, all electric with a brand new heat pump system. Latest bill was $253. Heat is set at 71-72 all the time. Not bad in my book.

$231 for 32 days (1510 kWh), all electric heat, 1800 square foot townhouse. Highest bill ever, but seems lower than most people have been reporting probably because my townhouse is in between other townhouses on each side (so I guess they're helping to keep me warm). My heat pump is 12 SEER and I have it serviced twice a year on contract.

Just to throw some #### out there. I guess everyone is aware that when there's an extended power outage the electric company can charge you for the
electric you didn't use when the power was out so revenue levels can be maintained. Found that little tidbit out 18 or so years ago when we got that really nasty ice storm and again after Isabel rolled through. They can also adjust your bills to pay for the lines and poles that are replaced, as well as overtime charges, after one of those storms.

You townhouse people cheat, however, by having heated homes on at least two of your walls to act as buffers, like having 20 foot wide heated insulated walls.

I am not getting what some are up in arms about. Our bills for this frigid weather were not that much off from last year. We do keep the house at 60, same sq ft as yours. Our house is 30 years old. Is yours newer? Could be the construction/insulation value. I am not saying our house is toasty warm. We bundle in the winter and wear a lot of sweat outfits!

I thought I was bad keeping it to 65/68 when we're home. Sweats and layers all Winter for us yup. Can't even imagine how much oil we'd use if we kept it at 70-something. Already been through 2 tanks of oil at around $900 each for a refill. Had to scramble to finish paying off the last tank to get another delivery. Hoping the 100 gallons we last requested instead of a fill-up will last through to Spring. Just don't have the money to pay for oil like this. I may drop the thermostat to 60. People paying $400 a month for electric heat isn't such a bad deal compared to the price of oil.

I do average bill pay to avoid sticker shock! :coffee:

Average Bill Pay is nothing but a delay of the sticker shock. I always pay for what I use each month. When you do the average bill pay - when your annual anniversary comes around, if you've underpaid - you owe. Sometimes the amount you owe could be significant. I don't need a $200 electric bill for 11 months and a $1500 one for the 12th month!

yeah ditto for us in Summer - we work hard outside doing critter chores so coming inside from say ... 90 degrees is COOL at 78/80 LOL - we also wear very little clothing in the Summer and use the ceiling fans to help also.

We have a heat pump, and oil as back-up. The electric this month was $300.00, and the oil tank had to be filled, and it cost $700.00. The heat is always set at 70. 2,000 square foot house, single level with crawl space. We're on the water, so that might have something to do with it. All I know, is that it's crazy. There are only two of us that live here too.
