All someone has to do is open their car door for some reason and that's all.
and they would be guilty of at least assault and liable for all damages incurred.

In light of this post and many others of recent... I've come to the conclusion you've fallen and bumped your head one too many times.
You can't afford to let cars tailgate you. A rear-ender is a fender bender for them and a trip to the hospital for you. Or worse. I am NOT advocating zooming between cars. I am advocate and aggressive self defense where you use your advantages, acceleration, maneuverability and braking to protect yourself from dangers. Separate yourself, create space.
Rely on your fellow mans concern for your well being on a bike as little as possible. You can't afford it.

If you can prove that they knew you were coming, and didn't just open the door to dump a coffee (folks who do this in parking spots should be fed to piranhas one limb at a time, and dont detach the limbs first) or spit, whatever. Barring intent, it's gonna be hard getting a dime.
I will admit to the occasional brake check, but do have a steel beam backing up my bumper.

Mopar made a very nice tow rig for the Charger, the reciever inserts on a vertical axis, so when not installed, nothing hangs below the bumper.....but up inside, its a 2 inch beam curved to match the contours of the plastic bumper cover.... when i got rear ended a couple years back (lady on phone going 35 or better in the rain hit and pushed a minivan into me as I was stopped to enter my driveway) the only mark on my car was imprints of his plate screw heads in the plastic
Even if you can prove all that stuff - and get money out of the other driver - it still won't help you heal any faster.
That is pretty cool looking, I would add that to my Jetta if such were available.
Yeah, in a moment of stupidity I did a brake check on a car that was tailgating me on Rte 4.. and as SOON as I did it I said to myself.. .. "MORON, WTF are you thinking!??"
And as you well know, I generally don't lolly-gag in the left lane..
You just have to be ready for it. As in don't be going 50 mph faster than the cars you are passing.
Like may of us, I've seen people on "crotch rockets" blow by traffic flow like it was sitting still.
Oh, but the looks from the purists when they see a utility trailer hooked to the back of an SRT You would thing I had smeared poop all over the Mona Lisa
I've seen bikes tow trailers, and a video on here of one being used as a tow truck for metro areas. There is a SmartCar at work with a little hitch on it. Cracks me up. Why not though? I towed a boat up to Deep Creek lake behind a 85 LTD. Class 2 bumper hitch.

I can't find anywhere that they changed the law in CA, but lane splitting is illegal in Md. Lane sharing is legal (two motorcycles riding side by side in the same lane).

The last time I checked, lane sharing as you call it, is illegal in Md.
And very dangerous.
I ride...SAFELY and obey all traffic laws. I am more cautious on my bike than in my car but idiots like this guy give us a bad rap. This is why cars are tailgating me and squeezing me out of my lane because they think we're all azzholes like that guy. It makes the roads less safe for the rest of us bikers. SMH.....
