Wow your right, what is she thinking a 93 for $5000.00
She paid $6500 and only put 350 miles on it
...and she believes the hype that it's a Harley so they hold their value

I understand that she is your friend. But I don't think that you will be happy with this bike.

If you truly want to become an avid rider, an 883 just won't do. Trust me.

Look into getting a second hand yamaha v-star 650. Nice size bike, nice looking bike, nice running trouble free bike, with some zip, cheaper than this sporty, and you'll be able to unload it easily when you are ready to upgrade to your softail, and you WILL want to upgrade.

The 883 comes with a rated (conservative) 53 hp and wieghs close to 600 lbs. The fun in riding comes when you twist that throttle. I know you said you just want something to run around town on, but WHY do you want a bike to just run around town on? They either just LOOK fun, or you've been on one and HAD fun. Either way, the fun comes from that twist of the throttle. And after about 3 months on the 883, you'll be wishing you had more power to grab. Everyone ever on an 883 will tell you the same thing.

There are hundreds of thousands of these 883's out there. The market is flooded with them. Don't buy it.

I started on a 1200 Sporty, and have a Softail and a Buell now.

Go for that V-star 650, and you won't be disappointed. I've recommended that before because friends of mine have gone that way and never looked back. My cousin just picked one up for his wife. It's an 04 with 3,000 miles on it for $3800. Not a scratch on it.

Also, get yourself signed up for a Motorcycle safety course as soon as possible, if they aren't already full.

I hope that helps.
