In today's mixed up culture such grandparents would sell the mountain and get a moble home Winnebego trailer and then travel, or else use the money on a fancy retirement and screw their grown kids.

Also, the grown kids would be self-sufficient because they were raised in a wonderful, supportive household. They would neither need nor request assistance from their parents.

If the Walton's son and his wife were alive today then they would be told to get abortions and take birth control after the first baby "John-boy" was born and they sure would be condemned for being poor and having five children. Because our present society has its values in the wrong places.

Society and the law does not condemn anyone for being poor; but it will condemn them if they are lazy-azz baby-popping leeches. And that is how it should be.
