No more parallel parking for the drivers test. I hope a new driver from here doesn't move to DC anytime soon without that skill.

This doesn't mean that parallel parking won't be covered in their driver's ed classes. I got my license 12 years ago. Parallel parking was required to be covered in class and on the road with the instructor but it was a known fact we would NOT be tested on it at the DMV. This was in Connecticut and still applies.

Most driving schools will still cover it.

That is a good thing.

So, I took my teenager to the Loveville MVA today for his driving road skills test. We were disqualified for a check engine light on. ugh. Registered for todays test with MD MVA online system back in first week of February. Was told today after disqualification to go back online and register again for upcoming available test times. Checked all over the state of Maryland. Loveville MVA actually had one of "more timely" dates of late May. Does anyone know if/how MVA handles cancellations/no shows for driving test? Does that slot open up and is now available if we were to say just walk in? I am assuming there must be daily no shows/cancellations at the MVA...what happens to those test slots? Thoughts on how to somehow get registered for an earlier time slot vs late May? Tried calling Md MVA, busy signal for hours. Just wondering if anyone had any experience with this. Appreicate it, thanks!!!

No walkup, no "I'll take their missed slot", no exceptions. I feel your pain. Son #1 went for the 1st driving test August 13, couldn't find his driving log, ended up 15 minutes late, no test. 2nd attempt he failed to pull over to shoulder for an ambulance, fail. 3rd time he didn't have his learner's on him, no test. 4th time he finally got his license. This was in November.

I think your child has the record for drivers test attempt. We were never asked for a drivers log, only had it for class. Has anyone taken the eye exam at the DMV in Lovevill? If so how did that go. It's either that or go to the DR.

Parallel parking is coveted in drivers ed class at CSM. My daughter just completed the class last month.

My daughter is in drivers ed now. Her instructor said she's heard of kids being disqualified because of a chip in the windshield. I hope my daughter doesn't get that instructor. I just had the chip in my windshield fix and that's the car she'll be using for her test.
Note: make sure he/she knows that leaving from behind the MVA building in Loveville is one way only. Someone failed because they went the wrong way.

The rules for the car are covered on the MVA website. Easiest unexpected fail is bad bulb in the taillight. Do a visual inspection of the car a couple days in advance to check for condition (enough time to fix anything), then do it again the day before you go, or a couple hours before you go so you can make an emergency stop at the autoparts store for a replacement bulb if needed. Check engine light is an automatic no. Stone chip cannot be in the area between the sides of the steering wheel (left-right) and between the top of the steering wheel and top of the windshield. If you have one, get it fixed. With the proliferation of automatic headlights, make sure your kid knows how to turn on the headlights manually.

People don't want to see little Jonny fail on the first attempt, I thought the old lady was pretty fair, she does look intimidating. I taught 3 people how to drive and one thing two of them failed on were once they get in the cones for parallel they did not get close enough and the lady wanted them worm there way closer to the curb. This I did not teach them because I had them back in with one shot to where there was no need for adjustment. Second time they went back not a problem worming in. Drivers test can rattle a teen’s nerve a bit. Ya'll leave the old lady alone, she does her job pretty good IMO.

I think I can count on one finger the times I have parallel parked in my 20+ years of driving, and it wasn't on my driver's test. I don't think I could do it well enough to pass a test today, but I also don't think it's necessary unless you live in one of the few places in the US that has only curb-side parking.

Despite not being able to parallel park very well I am an excellent driver with more than 800k miles driven, no accidents, and only one ticket (speed trap next to a "construction" zone).

. I just went through this. Kid failed- do over was 6 weeks away, according to the site. Checked the site thoroughly, once you are booked, you're stuck, unless you want to cancel and search again. I wouldnt want to lose my place in line, so I chose to just wait the 6 weeks.

Seems reasonable to me. If you failed a driving test you probably need more experience or better training. Can't expect to get that overnight. And yes I realize better training doesn't fix a windshield crack or check engine light, but you can't have a special policy for every single type of failure.

Just went thru this with my dad. Due to an 'incident', he was required to go thru simulator testing and mandatory road and written tests. Not easy for a 90 y/o. On the day of the road test it was raining, so I had to remind him to manually turn on the headlights.

The normal road test is a piece of cake compared to my dad's. He had to drive from the DMV office to his home and back again, a total of 22 miles on rain-slicked twisty hilly roads, real-world driving.

Mine is to the right of the wheel towards the center, but below dead center. I got it filled in yesterday but I can still see it. Most people do not notice it though.

Thanks! I hadn't thought of that.

they should also be aware if the vehicle has a wipers on, lights on feature like my Charger does. If I turn on the wipers, auto headlights are turned on with them.

That's a nifty feature. My car's not that fancy :( I see lots of people driving in the rain that could use that feature.

Hell, wifes new jeep, wipers are full auto, headlights are full auto including high beams. They turn off and on as the camera sees tail and headlights. Good enough that it works on a 90 as I wait to turn out onto Rt 5 from the private road.

That's really cool.

Does take some getting used to. She has finally learned when parking to not go through the normal shut down checklist. Since it's all auto, just leave it all turned on, wipers and high beams, and let the system decide when to turn stuff on. A bit harder for me to remember, because I drive all of the fleet, while she pretty much only drives the Jeep.
