My cat caught on fire

She's okay but lost hair on her tail. She jumped on a table where I had a candle lite and her tail immediately went up in flames. It was very frightening. I had to grab her and toss her in the sink, rinse her off and now her tail is singed. I've had cats all my life and I have never had anything like this happen nor have ever known anyone to have it happen.

Crap... :ohwell:

You just can't make stuff like this up.

Sorry. Good thing you were right there.

Poor thing! (You and the kitty, both!) I've heard of them knocking candles over, but never catching a tail on fire. I'll be sharing this with daughter who has indoor cats AND candles! Yikes!! :yikes:

Years ago my dad was cooking hotdogs on the grill. Our cat decided to jump up and see what smelled good. Jumped back down pretty quickly but not before he singed his whiskers off.

Pretty sad that a cat had to burn it's hair off to get me to read a forum post. Getting difficult to decipher and weed through all political rant forums. Venting:tantrum:tantrum over.

Oh my gosh! Glad the kitty is ok! My cat has a fondness for fireplaces. He climbed into the wood fireplace at our new house the first day and was covered in soot (he is supposed to be all white but was a little dingy for a few weeks.). Anyway, when he was a kitten he was at the vet and she said "the tips of his whiskers look funny...almost like they're singed." He liked to sit too close to the gas fireplace and they melted. :ohwell:

She has been working so hard cleaning herself and although the burnt hair smell has left the house, you can smell it on her. Hindsight, I think I realized she was on fire before she did.

Nic,

We have another cat that used to do that... now we have a pellet stove  but at least he has never caught himself on fricken fire. :ohwell:

Kitty has been very affectionate since her incident... freakishly affectionate actually... Her hair is still shabby but it is growing back.

It gives her character.

On the day of her wedding my girlfriend was trying to keep her cat out of the rooms the bridesmaids were in because of allergies. She accidentally shut the cat's tail in the door and chopped part of it off. Maybe over time (evolution) their tails will grow shorter.

I had a cat that had a broken tail when I found her. Eventually the broken part fell off; made me nauseous; so she wound up with a bob-tail.
As far as getting too close to heat sources; I had a propane space heater in the living room. She would put her nose on the grate in front of the flame and just sit there; never singed any whiskers, thankfully enough.

I know a lady who had the same thing happen to her cat's tail, the cat ran to get away from the flames and set the curtains on fire. So now the cat is running with a burning tail, the curtains are on fire, and she's trying to catch the cat to put the fire out! OMG was a mess.

The fire went out on the cat's tail due to the breeze generated from the cat running from her. So she was able to then run over and grab the curtains and rip the curtains down, and stomp them to put the fire out on her wall to wall carpet - talk about a mess! She decided not long after that to tear out all the carpet and had hardwoods installed. Oh and I don't think she burns candles anymore either.

A friend sent me this link today Treading Life: Today my cat caught on fire

^^ That kitty of hers looks just like ours. Apparently cats catching themselves on fire is NOT uncommon. I got 2 additional hanging candle holders - 1 for my bedroom and 1 for my living room area since I'll never leave one burning on a table again.

I love those heart warming Christmas stories

I bet you do knowing how you feel about cats anyway.

And this one would have been dead meat a long time ago in your house. She's pretty bad. If l leave my laptop open, she starts using her paws on it like she is typing on it. A few months back, she stole my G-key and a few days later, I found it but I couldn't get it to snap back in.

I'm sorry, but that is :killingme

Reminds me of when we were kids and my older brother put the cat in the clothes dryer. It came out all fluffy.
