My visit to Lusby

When we first moved to the area, we found a townhouse to rent down on Dowell road - the road by the Solomons firehouse. The owner was trying to sell it, but hadn't had much luck and just wanted some rental income in the meanwhile. We had a 6 month lease which gave us time to really get to know the area and find our house. I'd recommend our neighborhood, but there are only 25 houses and they don't turn over very often. We're in Lusby, but off the Coster/Mill Bridge roads.

Getting down to Lusby was fairly easy. It was nice, reminded me of Northern Ohio. It was dark and rainy, but it looks like a nice place to live.

I lived in Northern Ohio for about 5 years in Akron. Lusby is a very nice area and in no way reflects the weather of Northern Ohio. When I lived there, it snowed ALL the time and at night I never saw a star in the sky. I do miss Northern Ohio at times, especially Cedar Point. Their parks and trails were awesome. I have never seen so many beautiful nature trails in my life! My favorite is the F.A. Seiberling nature realm. Last time I was there, I saw a huge ground hog and was able to pet a doe and it's calf. These animals walk right up to you, it is so amazing! Here's the website: http://www.summitmetroparks.org/parks/

I know the park quite well. I lived in Cuyahoga Falls. I loved the metros also!

Hey there! I have family in the canton area, just below Akron! I love going to the Hartville Market every time we visit!

I noticed that when we were house shopping, too. This one took the cake, though: House owned by hillbillies. Not rednecks, that I grew up around and am comfortable with, but straight up hillbillies. I think I remember banjo music in the background. Junk everywhere. And the kicker: both of their cats were named "######". :faint:

We did NOT buy that home.

Edit: The name was the N-word, in case that didn't make it through the censoring.

Oh you haven't seen nuthin until you've gone house hunting in PG County. :faint: We looked at a house in Accokeek and I the tennants looked like they came straight out of "The Hills Have Eyes", they were missing a few chromosomes. We also hit some serious ghetto neighborhoods and I was terrified, but I put on a brave face and walked right on over and introduced myself to the hood gangstas. :faint:

LOL, well day two went better then day one. Looked at houses in St Mary's. One in Greenview West subdivision looked really nice, but went under contract that afternoon. The yard was somewhat small and I have a dog that needs some room to roam. The rest were nice, but not for me.

I need a big family room or basement to fit my couch and TV in. The house in Greenview had a nice basement. I had never seen a basement that had insulation like that but then it made sense. It seems a lot of houses are built with the majority of the basements above ground.

Do a lot of basements have flooding or dampness issues? Couple weeks I will be there for a week straight so I should have more time to find a house.

After the rain that is promised Sunday, Monday will be an excellent time to check wet basements. After having a very wet basement myself, I would never have one that isn't a "walk out". No stairwell fore me again.

You need to get some of that sand out of your "basement" as well.

So walkouts flood less, or when you say stairwell is that an outside stairwell that goes into a basement? Every time I see those I think that would be just asking for trouble. The thing I don't like about walkouts in basements or any doors in that case it seems to be an easy way to break into a house. It is usually hidden from easy view, and the doors always have a lot of glass on them.

A walk out basement will make a natural slope to keep water away from the foundation. I wouldn't worry about break-ins if you buy into a good neighborhood.

Look in Calvert again. Your house is there somewhere.

I actually just found Militarybyowner.com. Very nice houses on there that have been up for a while. Prices have started to drop. I think people are realizing the downturn finally.

Another question, are taxes paid by where you work, where you live, or both. I know in Ohio I was taxed where I worked on income, then had to file where I lived but was given a credit so I didn't have to pay extra. Texas doesn't have city or state income taxes which is nice, but real estate taxes are high.

Income tax is based on where you live, not where you work. State income tax is standard, then local tax is added on. Calvert is 2.8%, Charles is 2.9%, and St. Mary's is 3.0% of your taxable income.

Then there are property taxes, sales tax, gas tax, etc. Welcome to the Socialist Republic of Maryland!

Thanks for the answer. Taxes are everywhere, nothing you can do about it. No place I would rather be then be in America.

i like the walk out basement nothing like the outdoor lighting, sitting and being able to watch the snow, easy access to the patio/yard; however, i just moved into a house with the stairwell that leads in/out--boy, do i miss my walkout(with the sliding glass door). i think the basement with the stairwell is much more secluded. being as though we have a family room we don't use the basement, so we periodically go down there to check things out. i tell everyone, someone could be living down there and we would never know.

i have a stairwell that leads to the basement and i think about it flooding everytime it rains, but so far so good
