NASCAR Safety Innovations - WATCH THIS!

No comment on the Car of Tomorrow I see? EVERY NASCAR Sprint Cup racetrack has implemented the SAFER barriers. Indianapolis was the first, but I don't see all the F1 tracks implementing them as quick as they can.

Brett Bodine (or is it Geoff) was part of the HANS R&D. He was also the loudest proponent to bringing it to NASCAR and other racing divisions. In fact, I think Brett was using it in his racecar before any of the F1 drivers were.

No mention either of how NASCAR funds research for these safety innovations either?

Oh, did you forget to mention that the COT was designed by NASCAR. Because it seems to me you think only the HANS device saved his life. Do you think he would've survived that wreck had he been in an open wheel car or in a 2004 Pontiac Gran Am. Yeah, doubt it.

Perhaps maybe you should test that theory out. :jet:

I believe it was Geoff Bodine. Don't forget about all the safety R&D Jeff Burton has been involved with and Randy Lajoie. The seat he designed was used in McDowell's car and they said was a huge factor in him being able to walk away. :coffee:RACECAR SEATS: Custom Made Racing Seats by The Joie of Seating

I'd rather see the drivers get out of the car uninjured.

IMO, it's the showroom floor cars that need to become safer. People die in accidents at 25 mph every day. But look at what Michael McDowell walked away from - at 187 mph.

Michael McDowell was driving a race car that has a roll cage, seat harness, extinguisher system, etc. and also wearing a fire suit, helmet and HANS Device.
Not practical for the driver of a street car.

I don't see street cars driving down Rt. 301 with other street cars topping speeds of 180 mph either. Contrary to popular belief.

What is your point?
Mine is that the race car involved in that spectacular accident was designed to keep drivers safer in 187mph accidents. Many of the safety devices utilized in a race car are not practical for a street car and driver.

Besides, modern street cars are very safe in comparison.

WHAT?!?!?!?!?!

Go wreck your street car at 55 mph and let me know what happens.

People are dying on our roads in record numbers. 2 years ago, a death on the streets of Charles County was unheardof. Now, it's as common as wiping your azz.

It's gotten past ridiculous. The drivers, young and old, aren't going to get any better. The roads aren't the problem.

So, perhaps the auto industry needs to make the cars safer. Obviously, they're not as safe as they can be. It's :bs: for them to say that, they just don't want to spend the money in R&D, hire the people, and implement the actions it would take. If they did, and if they really cared, cars would've been getting safer a long time ago.

"According to police, Johnsen's 1995 Pontiac Firebird failed to drive within a single lane, traveled off the roadway and collided with a Verizon telephone pole and a tree."
"The police report lists weather (rain), the vehicle's speed, alcohol, and narcotics as determining factors in the accident."

For one, a 1995 Firebird. Thirteen year old technology. Secondly, speed was a factor. Should I go on?

First, that 13 year-old car is probably just as safe as a 2007 Trans-Am.

Second, the speed limits here in Maryland are very slow compared to other states (Florida, Virginia, North Carolina, etc, etc). So, the speed of impact might've been the same as it would be in other states. In fact, she was probably driving at a speed that is common, average in other states.

I seriously doubt that. Airbags, crumple zones, frame rigidity, etc, have changed very much in the past 13 years. Yes, street cars can be safer, and I am sure they will evolve to be safer as technology allows.
Modern street cars are much safer as compared to 13 year old technology.

She may have, however her speed for the conditions was too fast, as mentioned. Besides, what it your point with the comment below?

We have gone way off topic.

Obviously, that technology HAS evolved. :duh:

The technology's in America, but the auto companies close their facroties here and take them over to India where they can get the same labor for 5 cents an hour and make more money. They obviously don't care about putting more into R&D, otherwise they wouldn't be moving the jobs out of here and into third world countries.

Then come back with the comment below. I guess it wasn't obvious to you a few minutes ago:confused:

Back the Hell up there Sparky .....

do you want to pay 3 x's the prices now ..... Oh and Don't forget the Gooberment mandated
Fuel Economy
that requires auto makes to meet standards or pay Gas Guzzler TAXES ..... so the make smaller lighter, less crash worthy cars .... are what we get ....

Why do you think SUV's and Mini Vans are so Popular .... they are safer that Dodge Neons in accidents .....

how much does the average NASCAR Weigh ... now see how you can make it get 30 MPG and add another 500 lbs for creature comforts not already installed .....
