Regular iPad starts at $279 refurbished. I thought they would be high but that is outrageous, should have realized that when they charge $170 for a used iPod touch. It really makes me wonder why all of the apple geeks pay so much for a product that is not worth the price.

I got a Polaroid 7 inch tablet at Big Lots for $89 because I didnt know if I would really use it even if I had it (Paid $200 for a Palm Pilot 10 years ago that just sat collecting dust). I have to say its a nice little device for no more than I paid for it. I did have to sideload the android app store (it comes with the amazon store on it) but there are instructions all over the internet for that.

My el-cheapo tablet excels as an e-reader too.

I've been eyeballing the 7" Android tablets. They're going to be $49 on Black Friday everywhere that I've seen. I want one and my son wants one. I really wish that I knew someone with one so I could see if it's worth the money.

Never used the android, but the kindle fire works great.

I ended up getting him a Kindle Fire (and one for me too ) Thanks for all the help, everyone!

Quick question. I see that in order to use the Kindle Fire you have to be connected to WiFi. How do you do that? :stupid: Is there a cost or is it like cell phone towers and it connects to whatever network you are near?

Install a wireless router in your home. Under $30 at Wal-Mart.

If you have wireless network in your home it will pick it up. Otherwise, you can pick up the wireless signal in businesses, such as Panera, that make it available to customers.

How do you find out if you have a wireless signal? We have Verizon DSL for internet but it's not high-speed or anything.

Sorry for all the dumb questions but I'm really in unchartered territory here.

Unless you have a wireless router, you do not have signal but your neighbor might. Do you have a smart phone?

It's not a silly question. :huggy:

When you turn on your computer at home, is the internet connected using a cable/cord from the phone line to your computer? If it is, then you aren't wireless at home. But it's a simple fix, you set it up using a wireless router (and following the directions). Then your whole home will be wireless (if you want). As Socki said, you can pick a router up at almost any store for under $30.

No, I don't have a smart phone. I have a LG Rumor Touch. I looked online at walmart and can pick up a wireless router on my way home.

I will pick up a router on my way home today. That way it will be ready to go when my son gets his Kindle for Christmas.

Thank you Stocki and Migtig for all your help!
