Yes, this will be my first bike. I have only ridden dirt bikes.

A CBR 1000 as a first bike? A new one on top of that? That is a squid move.

If a sport bike is the way you want to go, and since this will be your first bike, look into a used 600. Recent 600's have over 100hp, more than enough for ANY beginner.

ok thanx. Another question I have is, If I decide to buy a used bike, what is considered high mileage? How many miles to people usually put on a bike before it is considered worn out?
On a sport bike like a CBR1000, with the type of riding you can SUSPECT the bike has been through, the suspension wear from "landing" from a wheelie, or a stoppie.. Anything more then 5,000 miles could be high mileage, but on a lot of bikes that could be 7 or 8 years of riding.

I wouldn't buy it because I know the throttle would be TOO tempting. I get enough temptation with what I have, and have a tendency to crack the throttle a little more than I should.

On that bike one little temptation could cost you your life.

 it's only going to go as fast as I turn the throttle!
...and right now you have no idea as to what will happen when you do
All you have to do is survive the first few months. I was thinking of just getting a 6 month policy on you.

I went from a 79 Yamaha XS1100 "down" to a 2005 Yamaha YZF600R and scared the crap out of myself with that itty bitty throttle and you want a CBR1000 as a first street bike?! Man, my hats off to ya!

With 100+HP at the wheel and 14k+RPM redlines todays 600's are nasty things to ride even for experienced riders!

As for being more than a car, my Ranger(liability) cost me 24 bucks a month, my F150(full coverage) is like 102 bucks a month..

So it all depends I guess...

I need to move ...... mine is $90 per month X2, a 95 Saturn SC2 and an 83 Jeep Wagoneer, my wife's 94Ford Explorer is 138 @ Nationwide , sux living this close to the beltway :faint:

And to think that my insurance rates almost doubled when I moved here from Philly.

Good Lord, It was 3000 a year for full coverage, and 600 a year for liability.
 I'll guess you're under 25

You might want to consider a bike without plastic bodywork. It's not uncommon to run up a $1000 repair bill if it tips over.

:yikes: You must be a youngin' then. Hell, I pay less than that for my truck, jeep, and two motorcycles, full coverage on all.

Wow. Look at a naked 600 sprtbike instead. Might be cheaper, and every bit as fun to ride.

A whole lot cheaper. I pay $50.00 per year for a 600, liability only.

I started on a 750 Gixxer, and heading down 7D towards Capt. Sams, I got stupid one day and had it running over 150....then the little voice in my head said "you effin dumb ass, a rock would kill you right now" never went over 70 after that...

And the other thing with buying a 1000 as a first bike, it IS NOT, I repeat, IS NOT A starter bike...don't let your pride get in the way, 600cc's is plenty, and 750 is tolerable....but to start on a 1000, coming from dirt bikes... its more bike than you will EVER need the first few years...

As a long time rider (got my first bike in 1983, a GS450E) I have to agree with the others here. Please rethink a 1000 as a first bike, no matter your dirt bike experience. I know, your young, and your friends are gonna ride your azz about what you got, especially if they have liter bikes them selves.

Ignore them, and please, ride a 600, or a standard kinda 750, then after a year or so, make the jump up. Nobody starts juggling with chainsaws. And do go naked, plastic bodywork, as noted, can total the bike if you just drop it at the redlight.
