No matter what I watch or read regardless of time period, I find them repulsive and smarmy. Why?

This is about King Louis XIV and the building of the castle and his reign. No matter what I watch or read regardless of time period, I find them repulsive and smarmy.

Try “To the Lake” on Netflix. It’s Russian — definitely the opposite of FrenchNo matter what I watch or read regardless of time period, I find them repulsive and smarmy.
I even dislike French decor... too gaudy.
Loved that one. But I love any kind of period-drama. My husband saw an ad for the new Bridgerton and goes, lemme guess you already binged thatBinging Versailles now. Its pretty good!

NOOO but it's on my list
Currently getting thru Outlander first. I have limited chances to watch my period dramas with noone else around in this house. Hard to follow when the lil monster is awake, and usually too risque when the preteen is around tooMine too!
Outlander is the BEST. It is truly addicting. I LOVE IT!!Starting Outlander.
Would you like me to ruin it for you?Broadchurch. Been out a few years but Netflix recommended it to me now that I've ended my relationship with them.
British mystery - boy's body is found on the beach and the investigation is assigned to a quirky investigator new to the department and town. Secrets are being uncovered about the townspeople right and left - every episode ends on a "dammit now I have to watch the next episode immediately" and so far I suspect everyone. Plus I want fish and chips so bad I can't see straight.
Great watch so far - only three seasons - 8 episodes each season and it reaches a conclusion in the last season that is supposed to make me cry. Bloody hell it might have been his best friend. Or Betty who's really Elaine. Or Jack the child predator. Or the Vicar.
If it's like the US version... nope. It's his best friend isn't it? The one who hated him?
