New Car Seat Law

Nope...it's hard to read in the version that is currently available, that I posted, between strike outs and brackets and other crap...but that section about out of state cars is bracketed...meaning that it was in the existing law but has been deleted by the new one.

You'd think they could post a readable version if we are going to have to comply in two months. :ohwell:

15 states including Virginia, plus DC currently require children to be in booster seats until age 8. As far as I can find, they don't make exceptions for out of state drivers, so if you've been crossing state lines with your 6 & 7 year olds not in a booster seat, you've been breaking the law anyway, so stop whining.

They will wait until the governor signs it. It's not technically law yet, but if he weren't going to sign it, it would be known by those who lobbyed for it. I found out from some friends of lobbyists, and they are all excited because he plans to sign it, but until he does, it's not official.

As a police officer, I wonder how this will be enforced. Most kids under 8 don't carry i.d. Most police officers don't carry scales or tape measurers?

4'9??? I'm only 5'1 and I'm 26-that means my daughter and I could have shared a car seat about 3 years ago, LOL.

My daughter is 7, not sure how tall she is, she's a short little sh*t, maybe 3'2, and she weighs 65 pounds-she sits in a backless booster. I would prefer for her to be in the booster with a back, but she was too big for it (her buddha belly got in the way). When we go on long trips I put it in the car and use the tether and then rather than use the harness I put the seat belt on her. It's not as safe as using the harness but I figure it's safer then the backless one.

A 3-yo was in a booster seat (I think every state in the country requires under 4 to be in a regular car seat, regardless of weight) and he got killed in a car accident. Parents figured since he was over 40 lbs it was ok. The video then proceeds to advertise some high end car seat.

What about a kid that is 3 and the size of a 5 year old? My son's highback booster seat says some odd inches and 37 pounds. He met both requirements over a year ago when he was less than 3. He's almost 4 now but not quite 40 pounds. I cannot remember how tall he is. I'm 5'2" and he comes up midway between my belly button and my chest. He's extremly tall.

I never said car seats were not important. All I am saying is that the law on the book is sufficient and the state is taking over our parental rights. How many adults do not wear seatbelts and that is the law. No matter how many laws our on the books lives will be lost in car accidents. Driving is a dangerous activity no matter how many laws you have. If a parent is not willing to put their child in a car seat without a law what makes you think they are going to put their child in a car seat because it is the law.

When all parents do everything correctly is about the same time that they stop making laws to PROTECT CHILDREN!

Thank you for posting this. I'm going to be babysitting my niece and nephew for the whole summer (school age kids), and I will need to find out thier height and weight before purchasing booster seats.

Why aren't the parents purchasing them? Or why don't you just use the ones they have?

:yay: Exactly. And what happens after some kids die while being in this type of carseat? More laws.

And speaking of parents heeding nor not heeding safety guideline warnings or laws - what about the airbags? Every vehicle carries the warning about small children sitting up front with airbags. Yet, I see small-statured children sitting up front all the time. Personally, I chose to follow that guideline with my oldest son even after he reached that age/weight limit warning, because until the last couple of years, he was very thin & short-statured.

I have the same problem. My son who turned 4 this week was having to be stuffed into his carseat because he was too tall. I switched him over to a booster with a back on it this week. He seems ok with it but I've had to yell at him once or twice about taking his seat belt off after I pull into a parking spot. I've told him, not until the car is off or until I say so. I've looked on the internet for some sort of lock that you can put over the seat belt lock so he can't undo it himself. The only one I've found is for handicapped kids and seems to be impossible to operated even for adults and god forbid if I have to get him out in an emergency. My 7yr old doesn't even question about using a booster seat.

Is there no age requirement also on the car seat or booster?
