New To The Area

I will be moving to SoMD this summer (from Houston, TX).

After giving it some thought, I realized I could reach out to residents using forums like this one.
Maryland is new to me, so I’m grateful for any information others can provide.

Just reaching out for folks’ thoughts and advice.
Understanding that opinions are likely to vary, can anyone here point me in the direction of recommendations for places to eat and local attractions?
Really interested in people’s recommendations for where I might live.
Going to be working at St. Mary’s college of Maryland, and while friendly people there have offered some recommendations I wanted to get others’ perspectives, too.
Of course, answers to questions I didn’t know to ask are welcome!

Haha! Ahh... I will stock up before leaving then. After miles of driving it will help! Might I bring you something? Juicy bbq sandwiches. Unbelievable milkshakes. Really Good fudge. Oh my!
We are currently right down the road from you in Port Lavaca, TX. Their claim to fame is they have the smallest Buc-ees ever. If they removed the Buc-ees sign, you would think it was a Stripes C store.

Our next stop on our tour of Texas is going to be Kemah, so I can ride the Ferris wheel.

My Buc-ees go to was the raspberry scones. They use to sell them glazed and unglazed. I always go unglazed. Then they stopped selling the unglazed ones. I use to scrape the glaze off but that got annoying. I have also reached my limit of beaver nuggets, which at 1 time in my life I did not think was possible. I still get a chopped brisket sandwich now and again. My other current favorite is the cinnamon bear candy. The Italian wedding cake balls are pretty good too. I try to limit my intake of those.

I'm going to have some serious withdrawal when I'm no longer in close proximity to the beaver. Not that I go often but it's reassuring when 1 is within driving distance. I'm sure people hear are tired of me singing the praises of Buc-ees. It's an experience that's hard to describe.

Welcome. Like SG, I live a mile away from the campus. As others have noted, we can supply almost any information. Great food all around, most places are just fine to live, depends on what sort of living experience you are after. Subdivision with tiny lots and HOAs, commute time, access to shopping. Apartment, single family home, that sort of thing.

Their bathrooms alone make them amazing. Heck, some times I’ll stop by just to use them even if there is no real need. I know, it’s crazy but it’s true. Strange, huh?

In a better world Buccees’d be everywhere. Still, I’m used to not having them nearby.

Just lucky to have been here in TX for the past 6 or so years where they’re so common. Up in the north and along the east coast I am assuming they’re nonexistent. Ready to learn of any places like Buccees in Maryland, though! Got any recommendations? Oh, and glad to have a Southern Marylander for a temporary Texan neighbor!!

Coming from Houston to St. Mary's, you are in for a big shock and lifestyle change.

What will ease your transition is living in the south part of the county so your work commute will be a breeze. Rush hour on 235 will seem laughable compared to what you're probably used to, but every little thing helps.

I'm trying to come up with positive comments but.....yeah. All I can say is you're in for a big shock and lifestyle change.

Welcome and I wish you the best :howdy:

Hey, there! Welcome from Southern Maryland.

I live about five miles south of the SMC campus, and love it here. I hope you have a positive experience as well, and come to love it as much as we do.

Have you researched places to live? Hint: find a place south of the Hermanville Road intersection (Route 235 on one side/Route 5 on the other side). That seems to be a good dividing line on larger lot size, lower home pricing, and far less traffic to contend with.

There are no places like Buc-ees in Maryland or anywhere else but TX. But that reminds me:

The biggest adjustment will be when you get hungry for BBQ or Mexican. Buy a smoker and learn to do your own brisket. There is a decent enough sized Hispanic population that the grocery stores carry raw tortillas in the fridge case next to the whomp biscuits - strangely that Hispanic population doesn't translate to good Mexican restaurants.

The good news is summer begins crab season, so you'll learn how to pick steamed blue crabs. Also the shrimp in MD are steamed, not boiled, and I predict you'll become a convert.

The part of Maryland where you'll be is quite rural and no proper city to be found. Depending on where you end up living, Annapolis is maybe an hour away and a terrific day trip.

Leonardtown is a cute small town, with a walky-shoppy-eaty-drinky area. In fact, you could live in Ltown and go straight down Rt 5 to work - someone else will have to tell you what that traffic is like but it certainly can't be the mess that 235 is.

You'll also like Solomons Island, which is a seaside town with places to eat, drink, and recreate.

I think you'll like the friendly people and reduction of crime (compared to Houston).

I'm trying not to sound negative, and honestly while I love Texas so much I wouldn't live in Houston (or Austin, or Dallas) either. It will be an adjustment for sure but you may welcome the slower pace and lowkey atmosphere.

But I'm not kidding about that smoker....and you probably already know how, but if you do need a "recipe" for proper TX brisket let me know.
