When I arrived in SOMD late last century, I had no idea of the political culture. It's not like they have billboards or other ways to announce political leanings.

oh, is southern Maryland very blue? maryland itself I understood to be rather purple, and the city of Houston is itself rather purple, too (with plenty of voices on either side making themselves heard).
Just to cover my bases: my politics are rather centrist and don’t dictate much in terms of where or how I live; is that not the case in southern maryland? Usually I’m referred to as something of a slightly left libertarian by friends who know more about politics than me. Really, though, I don’t quite care. Glad to meet you all either way, though! (Of course I welcome friendly political discussions!)

Maryland as a state is as blue as it gets - don't let that Republican in the Governor's mansion fool you. St. Mary's is a military county, which tends to be more conservative, but it's also a college area full of idealistic liberals, so I think purple is accurate. On here - the forums - we lean to the right of center, with a handful of extremists (depending on what you consider extreme) on either side to keep the arguments and name calling hopping.
I didn't even mention it in my initial response because if you're coming from Houston you won't have any political adjustment to speak of.
