Teamsters union authorizes potential strike at Anheuser-Busch


The Teamsters union's strike authorization vote could increase pressure on Anheuser-Busch to negotiate with the union


The Teamsters union announced Saturday that its members overwhelmingly voted to authorize a strike against Anheuser-Busch’s breweries in the U.S. if the union and beermaker are unable to reach an agreement on a new labor contract early next year.

The union said that of the 5,000 Teamsters members who work at 12 Anheuser-Busch breweries in the U.S., 99% voted to authorize a strike if the two sides don’t secure a new labor contract raising wages, protecting jobs and securing benefits. The union’s current contract expires on Feb. 29, 2024.

"Teamsters stand firm in our fight for the best contract at Anheuser-Busch, and this powerful strike vote proves it," said Teamsters General President Sean O’Brien. "Our members’ labor, talent, and sacrifice are what put Anheuser-Busch products on the shelf, and we are committed to getting a contract that rewards and recognizes their hard work."

"If Anheuser-Busch’s executives can’t get their act together to negotiate an agreement that respects workers, we will see them out on the streets," O’Brien added.

General question, not really specific to AB/Teamsters.

How can these unions strike right before every contract renewal period as a means of pressuring the company? Isn't that violating the existing contract? I understand if they get to the end of the contract period and are unable to come to a new agreement, but if you are still covered by an existing agreement this shouldn't be allowed.

Would they allow the company to refuse to let union workers work starting a couple months before a new contract? Obviously that would be difficult if their entire company is union, but say they have 3 plants and only 1 is union. Can they shut the union plant down SPECIFICALLY to impact those employees ability to negotiate a new contract?

Likewise, Rock and Pool suggest that the victory has already been won, essentially claiming that it's time to let the mercy rule come into play.

Unfortunately, there's more to this story than just some random change of heart among those mentioned. Specifically, Bud Light gave the UFC, owned by White, a $109 million sponsorship deal. Whether the other two guys are also financially involved with the brand in some way, I don't know.

Regardless, conservatives should be asking themselves why they should give two shakes about whether Dana White gets $109 million. As Walsh asks in his segment, how does that help you? How does that help your family? It obviously doesn't. Rather, caring about that is a symptom of the recent Republican trend of being obsessed with what celebrities think.

AB isn't an American company and isn't "more aligned with American values". Dana White needs to go seek other endorsements, i'm sure plenty of other companies would be willing to sponsor the beer at his events or advertise on his programming.

Maybe I am really dumb, but to me a plan to strike a company that just took a Multi-Billion dollar hit and is having a problem gaining back that ground sounds like madness. Are they deliberately trying to put Anheiser-Busch out of business.?
