P90X, I love it

Xstretch is a stretching routine that is hella boring - I never liked to exercise so I want to actually do 'something' that I can trick my pea sized brain into believing is useful. I got a mat from the NEX as well as dumbells - the p90x store seems awfully expensive although their shake was superior in taste to what I got at gnc - but at tons more $$$ I think i'll stick with GNC...
The food plans - at first was all gung ho on it but in the real world I dont have time to prepare all the stuff for a decent meal and work out in addition to have any other life so kind of fell away from it BUT that being said I buy no more chips, candy, fast food etc - basically eat like a normal person SHOULD instead of the way I like.
Thanks for the info! I felt the same way when I called them up this week to order it. It was a quick process but then the "infomercial" started over the phone. "For just 3 payments of $49.95, you can get the mat, chin up bar, 3 rubber bands and vitamin supplement..." I said no thanks. Then I looked at their site and they wanted $90 for the chin up bar alone! I thought that bar would damage the door frame and (big as life) some of the reviews said it did!
I can actually use my Total Gym for the chinups/pull ups for now, until I come up with a better way to do them.

I will need to get a few dumbells and the push up stands however. Is NEX the Navy Exchange? I'm not military so I'll have to look somewhere else. I guess Dicks or Sports Authority would have them??

I already eat right (no sodas, chips or other junk) in 30 years, so it's not hard to adjust. I just need to learn to cook without butter and Olive Oil. I've always used Smart Balance butter to cook with but even that has lots of calories! I'll have to start using Olive Oil spray now.

My problem is my age and, if I can't exercise, I gain some weight. Not much because I eat right but, thanks to a heel injury, I can't run right now.

I'll get my Whey drink from WalMart or GNC after I compare ingredients. Someone on the Beachbody/P90X site said their Whey powder contains artificial ingredients? Amazing!

Age? Did I mention I am 48? Tony Horton, the guy in the videos (a terrible video instructor/trainer IMO) was 45 at the time P90X was made and marketed... Of course he had been exercising his entire adult life. I dont beleive age is really the issue as much as drive or will power. There are some things I just cant do or do very well because of injuries or misuse over the past 48 years but I find a work around (total Gym pull ups for example) and keep plugging away and it is actually noticeable now, The really important part is I feel better. Walmart has dumbells that are pretty inexpensive, and I even found the pull up bar thing at ross for around 20 bucks, I havent ruined any door ways when I do use mine. Just a littlke discoloration of the paint.

Skip the P90X drink mix, it's too expensive. Got to Wal-Mart or BJ's and pick up some whey protein drink mix. There is a small amount of creatine in the P90X mix which helps with muscle building, but you can take a supplement in the form of a tablet and get the same amount of creatine.

Here is the recipe for my after workout drink (when I was working out regularly)

1 scoop of whey
1 scoop of Ovaltine chocolate drink mix
1 banana
2 strawberries
14 ozs milk
double handful of ice

Blend well and drink up. You should try to get this down within 30-60 minutes of your workout.

You're right. Their "Results & Recovery" powder is $50 plus $15 S&H for a 30 day supply. Are they nuts? I went to WalMart today and got everything I need to start the program. They had the dumbells, push-up stands, the Whey powder, the protein bars and the Creatine powder which was $18 for a 2 pound container (much bigger than their 30 day supply).

I hope to start the program on December 26th. I'll either be much more "cut" by April 1st.....or dead, but I won't give up! My mind is set; I just hope my body is ready for this "shock & awe"...:lmao:

I am seriously considering starting this program Jan. 3. Have heard nothing but good things about it too.

WOW!

This is my first day doing this program, and it kicked my butt!! I was embarassed! Now, I haven't used my Total Gym or my treadmill since my foot injury in July but I didn't think I was THIS far out of shape. My body doesn't look bad physically, so it came as a shock to me that I couldn't do many push ups or crunches. (I aced ALL the dumbell workouts however) :yahoo:

I used to work out 20 minutes a day on my Total Gym and run one hour a day on the treadmill, 5 days a week, so what gives? I even did some warm up exercises for the last 5 days, just to prepare myself. I guess the intensity wasn't there.

I do feel great though, so I know it will work for me. I heard Tony say that, for first time users, their "day" comes around the end of the first month. I also heard some of the first time users say that they couldn't complete it all until around the 30 day mark also... I do love how I feel right now though...

After a workout you actually don't want to be taking in a lot of protein. Protein is absorbed more slowly than sugar and your muscles need nutrients right away. Recovery drinks like the P90X formula and others are mostly carbs (and a 4:1 ratio of carbs to protein specifically) which is what your muscles need after a strenuous workout to replenish the glycogen stores you've just thoroughly exhausted. GNC has one that I've used but it tastes like diet fruit punch. There's been some research to suggest simple chocolate milk works just as well. The P90X stuff tastes like an orange creamsicle, so that's a bonus. Look into recovery drinks and see what kind of alternatives people are using instead of the P90X formula, which is expensive, and I'm sure you can find something that works right for you. Protein powder alone isn't going to get the job done though.

Protein powder is a necessity, just not right after a workout.

I agree Thistle. I usually drink my protein drink at breakfast, then I wait about 30-45 minutes to work out. For my workout, I mix my recovery drink with water and sip it throughout the workout. It "kills 2 birds with one stone" and it tastes great; like diet fruit punch (as you said).

I've always found that the whey protein drink is NASTY no matter which flavor I buy but it DOES taste a bit more tolerable when mixed with milk instead of water, however. Ironic because I hate milk and love water.

I would love to try Tony's recovery product because orange creamsicle is to die for, but I will not pay their outrageous price PLUS shipping.

I've completed my first week and I love it, love it, love it! I feel soo much tighter all over and surprised myself that a 56 year old man can hang with the cardio part. :yahoo:

Push ups and sit ups have always been my weakness since childhood but I'm going to keep trying and hope that, by the 30 day mark, I'll be doing them a lot better...

I'm not sure what your goals are in using the program, either losing weight or toning up, but I can offer a suggestion on taking that protein powder.

I also like to take it with breakfast, but I don't drink the straight water/milk mixture. I blend 3 scoops with one banana and about 2-3 tablespoons of peanut butter and 1/2-1 cup of almond milk until I get the desired consistency.

I use the EAS protein powder they have at BJs, vanilla flavor.

Almond milk is amazing. It's lower in calories than skim and it's fortified with all the vitamins and minerals in milk and then some. If you don't mind the flavor of almonds, you might like it. Drinking a glass on its own you can really taste the almonds, but mixed in a shake, or with cereal, I can barely tell the difference. Shoppers has 2 brands, Blue Diamond (what I buy) and Silk. An unopened container also has a much longer expiration date than milk (use within 1 week once opened though) and if you go to the cereal aisle, they have room temp cartons that don't need to be refrigerated until opened (great for camping!). I keep one of those as overflow in case I forget I'm running low and have a half dry bowl of cereal.

Glad you like P90X. I'm in my 2nd week of month 2 right now and I'm an Insanity graduate. I'm getting much more visible results from P90X, but I liked the Insanity videos better.

I recommend looking at the P90X facebook page discussion forum for advice and tips, and the photos for inspiration. Some people have had amazing transformations.

Thanks Thistle. I've tried the almond milk on cereal and it is good. It's soy milk so it does last longer in the fridge. I also drink half a protein drink called "Naked" now & then because it is 100% fruit. I'm going to the grocery store tomorrow so I'll look for almond milk and see if it lessens the Whey "yuk". :yay:

Well; I will have completed my third week of P90X tomorrow and I have to say, it is everything that I wanted and expected. I don't see any physical results yet but I do feel a big difference. The only part I still can't finish is the Ab ripper X. WOW! It's a killer workout for my abs even when I don't do it all.

I'm having a problem with the food also (HELP!) I just cannot eat everything they suggest. I try my own versions of their meals because I can't stick to theirs 100%. I can do the shakes, protein bars, the meat and salad meals fine, but the I cannot seem to make the major meals taste any good.

I've tried the almond soy milk with the Whey powder and it is :barf:
I've also tried the strawberry, vanilla and the chocolate Whey powder with both milk and water and I can't stomach them either. I guess I'll have to find another brand maybe? Do they all taste the same?

I think I'm going to give up the Creatine drink also when I use it all up. I don't think it's doing anything, really. I was sore the entire first week and into the 9th day but, after that, I haven't been sore since.

I want to make sure you're drinking the right milk. Almond milk is not soy milk, they are two different products. Almond milk is made from pureeing almonds in water and then straining it. They then fortify it with vitamins and minerals so in the end, it has fewer calories than skim milk and more nutrition. You can make it at home and you can use the leftover almond puree in baking, though I'm not sure it's cost effective to buy as many almonds as it takes to make half a gallon of milk vs buying it.

I've only tried one protein powder, and I never drink it mixed with water or milk straight, I always mix it with food, either fruit and milk in a shake, or with oatmeal. You might not even need to take it that often. If you're getting enough protein in your diet from the foods you eat, there really isn't a need to take the powder.

As for the meal plan, I don't follow it. I stick with the Insanity nutrition plan which is much more simple. Five small meals a day, and attempt to hit a 40:40:20 ratio of carbs:protein:fat. You need to calculate your caloric needs using the Harris-Benedict equation and once you know how many calories you need every day, you divide those up over your five meals.

The H-B equation takes into account your age, weight, height, gender, and activity level to find the number of calories you need each day to MAINTAIN your current weight. If you need to drop pounds, you subtract 500-750 calories, and if you need to gain, you add about 500. First you find your basic metabolic rate and then you multiply it by a coefficient that depends on your activity level. If you're doing P90X, your coefficient will be the second highest.

Lastly, as for the recovery drink, the purpose is simply to refuel your muscles so they are less fatigued and ready to perform again sooner. Your body keeps about an hour's worth of glycogen in your muscles for immediate use. After an hour of working out, those stores are sapped so it helps to replace them as soon as possible, within an hour is recommended. Recovery drinks contain simple sugars, fructose, dextrose, etc. so that you can replenish those stores very quickly. Protein powder, creatine and all that aren't really the point of a recovery drink, what you need right away is carbs in the form of sugar. I've heard recently that Boost chocolate drink has the correct carb:protein ratio (4:1) and similar calorie count as the P90X drink so I'm going to try that when my supply runs out. It's also around $1 a serving at walmart.

I'm not a nutritionist or an expert in fitness or anything. Everything I've told you I've gathered either from my own experience or from reading the discussions on the P90X and Insanity facebook pages and Beachbody forums.

My bad. I know it's not Soy almond milk; I just have a habit of calling it that because it comes in the same type of container.

I do eat a lot of protein so I figured that I wouldn't need the Whey drink. I'll keep up the Creatine drink since it does taste great. I mix it with ice cold water and sip it during the breaks in my workouts. It's much better than plain water.

I'll check out the "Boost" drink tomorrow. I've also found some good drinks at Giant recently. They tried to mix them in with some of the other so called "natural" drinks but their ingredients tell a different story.

I recently started P90x...so far so good. It was my goal to get better toned and drop a couple pounds so I thought this was the best idea. I think I'm going to be happy with the outcome :)

My husband and I started yesterday. It's tough, but I'm sure it will be well worth it.

As the OP said: "I love it!" After the first week, I couldn't even bend down. After that, I just worked out through the pain and it slowly went away. After the 9th day, no more soreness. As Tony says: "Just do the best you can".

It IS tough but you'll feel the results within a week. I watch parts of tomorrows workout, the night before, to get an idea of what I'll be doing. It makes the workout go smoothly because I know what's coming.

I watched the "Core Synergistics" DVD last night and I kept saying to myself: I'm gonna die tomorrow... :lmao: When I actually did the workout, I felt a better tightness in my abs than I did with the "Ab Ripper X" workout.

How is everyone doing? I haven't given up, don't plan to. I have heard from a few that I know who have given up. I can see results which is such a great motivation!

I'm soo happy for you Bay Kat! Results really do motivate us and I have no intention of giving this program up!

Tonight is Sunday and tomorrow I'll be starting my 5th week of it. As I look through the DVD's, I see that the workouts will be getting more intense. He does 3 weeks on and 1 week off of the muscle building workouts. I've just finished week 4, which was mostly stretching, Yoga and aerobics but I actually longed for the muscle workouts of the first 3 weeks. I wanted soo much to go back and do them....but I didn't. Now comes 3 weeks of serious muscle work. Last week I had to buy heavier weights and that's a good thing!

Personally, I feel great. Physically, my muscles are rock solid now but not any bigger....yet. My side abs "obliques" (though still covered up by a bit of extra skin) are starting to show themselves nicely but I'll really be glad when the "6 pack" shows itself. My jeans are now a bit looser around the waist, so it IS working. :yahoo:

I've really been struggling with the food part of it, however. I cannot drink the Whey powder and I cannot stomach most of the recipes in this program. After doing some serious research last week, I'll be starting a different eating program tomorrow that includes lots of natural "unprocessed" protein. Now I won't have to choke down the chalky Whey powder, those flavorless meals and those cardboard tasting SOY bars! :barf:

It's those last 10 pounds that won't go away and now I know why. All those lies I've heard about how good wheat bread is for me and how bad eggs are.
I never knew how bad those SOY protein bars were but I'm done with them.
I knew the Special K and the Slim Fast ones were bad (just read their ingredients) but I never thought the others were too. Soy is soo processed that it's almost toxic but soo many people have been led to believe it's good for them! I never knew that until just a few days ago.

Rock on and keep us posted! :buddies:
