The Maryland Medical Examiner's Office ruled the death of a teenager in custody on murder charges in the killing of a police officer was a homicide.

Ronnie Lionel White, 19, of Laurel, died Sunday morning in his jail cell. He had been charged with first-degree murder in the death of 39-year-old Prince George's County police Cpl. Richard Findley. Police said White was the driver of a pickup truck that struck Findley on Friday.

Prince George's County jail spokeswoman Vicki Duncan said White was found unconscious in his cell about 10:30 a.m. Sunday. She said White was alone in his cell and there were no signs of trauma.

White was admitted to the jail at 12:24 a.m. Saturday and given a medical assessment before being placed in a cell.

Jail officials said he had been classified as a "high-profile offender" and was being housed alone in a maximum security cell. Guards checked on him every 30 minutes.

Guards had checked on White about 10:15 a.m. Sunday. At the time, he was sitting on the edge of his bunk and appeared alert, according to a press release.

When they returned at 10:30 a.m. with his lunch, corrections officers found White "sitting on the floor" of his jail cell, unresponsive, the release said.

Guards could not revive him or detect a pulse. An ambulance took him to the Prince George's County Hospital Center at 11:08 a.m. He was admitted at about 11:28 a.m. and pronounced dead at 11:39 a.m., the release said.

County Public Safety Director Vernon Herron has asked police to launch an investigation into White's death. The jail will conduct an internal investigation.

White was one of four people taken into custody Friday after Findley, a veteran police officer, was struck and killed by the driver of a stolen pickup truck.

Findley had been monitoring the truck on Laurel-Bowie Road when several men returned to the vehicle, police said. They rammed Findley's cruiser during an attempted traffic stop, then hit the officer when he got out of the cruiser.

According to court records, White pleaded guilty to illegal possession of a firearm last year and to drug possession in another case. In 2006, he was charged with first-degree assault and armed robbery, but the case was dropped, records show. Last November, he was sentenced to more than six months in prison, but it's not clear when he was released.

It was unclear if White had an attorney, and family members could not be immediately located.

A funeral service for Findley is set for 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph's Church in Beltsville with interment at Lakemount Memorial Gardens in Davidsonville. Viewings will be held from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and again from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Borgwardt Funeral Home in Beltsville.

I have no sympathy for anyone who kills a police officer, but if it turns out a correctional officer is the one who killed this thug they are the biggest idiot on the planet. Was this scumbag's life worth all the crap they and the dept are going to have to deal with as a result (investigations, lawsuits, the officer resposible losing job/going to jail himself, etc)? Not to mention their own family's future? This piece of slime was not worth it.

I was hoping he had offed himself/natural causes.

I'm still holding out hope that it was somehow self inflicted. If not, the cop who did this deserves to fry. There's nothing worse than a cop betraying the public trust and acting as judge, jury, and executioner.

Channel 4 just reported that he had two broken bones in his neck.

I was also hoping it was self inflicted but I don't see how that's possible. How could he strangle himself to death, breaking two of the bones in his own neck? This punk's family is gonna be rich from this settlement. UFB.

That could still be self inflicted, but it's not sounding good. Man, this pisses me off.

If someone killed this idiot, I'll agree it was the wrong thing to do but I can't say it pisses me off. I think I would want the chance to tell this person how wrong he was, then shake his hand. Maybe he should go on trial and be sentenced to a weekend in jail. If someone killed one of your family members or your best friend, wouldn't you like about 10 minutes behind bars with him?

The saddest part about this story is that it will now overshadow the more important one, the death of the officer.

Well: you can bet anyone who entered the cell area is under suspiscion. I am sure they have video tape and a sign in book. Nobody walks into a place like this without someone knowing about it. Somebody is sweating bullets now.

Someone will have to recreate the arrest procedures.

If someone did a neck-lock on him or pulled a nightstick across his throat, he may have suffered the fatal injury there (suspect the hyoid bone was broken, it's the usual sign of strangulation death). A few hours of swelling or bleeding into the soft tissues of the neck might lead to a delayed asphyxiation.

This will give more ammo to the Maryland NAACP, who's demanding an investigation any time a melanotic young man dies at the hands of the po-po.

He is 19 years old and appears to be a fair sized man, The latest is that he was probably strangled. The guy that did it would have to be a pretty strong fellow. Either that or he had help.

If there's a way to screw something up, PG County govt will find it. This screw up will probably end up over shadowing the tragic loss of a good police officer.

As I read the case unfold, I WANTED the kid's death to be natural or due to withdrawal of drugs, etc.

I suspected the temptation would be too great for a PG prisoner, who KILLED A PG POLICE OFFICER, being held in a Max. Security - one room in a large facility - in a large PG Correctional Complex - with only a few hands a day running past the prisoner, would lead to no good.

All of the statements about the actions of one puts a dark shadow on all the force is right. Men in blue are our street soldiers, so to speak. It's a brotherhood - and more likely a few took vigilante and revenge or even eye for an eye action.

Unfortunately, the "kid" should have been taken out of jurisdiction. May or may not have helped, but emotionally charged bretheren seem to want to take care of business. Can't say I wouldn't feel the same.

I definitely DO NOT WANT the legal system to award the punk mother phucker's family a friggin dime because their drug-slinging, bank robbing, gun-toing, POLICE OFFICER KILLING son was retaliated upon. Any grandstanding lawyer who takes this should have a nice afternoon tea with arsenic and biscuits. :coffee:

33 hours later, and after a medical exam? Wouldn't the autopsy see the difference?
