Poison Ivy

My parents own two waterfront lots in the colonial beach area that are wooded and have a lot of poison ivy. They have asked me to either have someone go and spray to kill the poison ivy or spray it myself. They will be visiting from California next month and would like to be able to walk their property and try and get them perked (sp?)

Is any one familiar with a type of spray I could purchase, one that works the best etc...

Thanks :howdy:

i saw that at lowes but i wasn't sure if that really worked or not. thanks :howdy:

I does, but keep in mind that once it looks dead, it can still get you! The vine still holds some residual oils. So wear gloves, long sleeve shirts, etc, if you're going to handle.

... and never, ever burn it!

I tried it last summer. It works GREAT. I sprayed a hillside next to my property and it killed EVERYTHING on the hillside except the pine trees because I made a point of NOT spraying them. There was poison ivy, blackberries, prickers, some kind of tree with spikes on the trunk, poplars, all kinds of stuff. All dead. All STILL dead. Very little has come up so far this year. I plan to transplant the pines this fall and then plant some sort of grass, maybe zoysia.

Ortho Vegetation Killer. Kills everything. You put enough by the roots and you can kill a small tree.

If you have access to running water (ask the neighbors if you can use their hookup, tell them why and they may let you), use a garden sprayer and get the mix it yourself concentrate, it's cheaper that way. Otherwise, get it in the gallon bottle w/ battery powered sprayer AND a bottle of concentrate and bring a bunch of water and after using the pre-mix, you can mix your own.

Don't worry, they're waterfront lots so it will just rinse off into the river.

Once read an article that claimed some folks had gotten a rash from fossilized poison ivy.

If we read about a mysterious fish kill in Colonial Beach, we'll know what happened.

RiverRat uses something on her poson ivy, its a pump thing not sure what it is, just that it takes about a week before the poison ivy dies off. She has wellwater so she's really careful about what she sprays on her plants or what fertilizers she uses, etc... I'll ask tonight what she uses or mention the thread to her.

Funny thing is I have no idea how much poison ivy is in her yard until about a week later walking about outside I see all these yellow plants everywhere and then realize its ALL poison ivy :jameo:

so how long until it is actually dead? Should i spray it first then run through it with a weed wacker / lawn mower a week later? Or can i do it all in the same day?

Brown and looks dead, a week to 10 days. Safe to attack with a weed wacker or lawn mower, not sure I would even go there... By all means leave the lawn implements in the shed. You'll only be spreading the stuff everywhere!

my 2 cents!

Maybe you aren't affected by it, but if you are sensitive wear a lot of protective clothing. The oils stay in the plant after it is dead. Do not burn it if the smoke will affect anyone in the area.

Hire a couple of mexicans.....I honestly don't think they can catch it!

Never burn poison because of the risk of inhalation.

If you must do it yourself. I reccommend ortho poison ivy killer and a sprayer from So. States

Follow the dang destructions and mix it accordingly. In a week or two it will be dead and you can remove it with gloves and caution.

BTW are you sure it is poision ivy?
