Propane Tanks and Toilets

I've got 2 empty 20lb propane tanks that are out of date and can't be refilled anymore. I'm also remodeling 3 bathrooms at the house, so have some porcelain fixtures to dispose of.

Is there anywhere other than the landfill to dispose of these? I've heard that old toilets and other porcelain fixtures can be recycle by being crushed and used as road material. Salvage yard does not take propane tanks or else I'd add them to my scrap metal pile.

Don't try to refill the bottles, take them to an exchange dealer (Walmart, Lowes, Sheetz, etc...) and turn them in for new bottles. Matters not that they are out of date.

That's how I've gotten rid of many of them.

Others got used for target practice.

LOL...I wonder how much tannerite you can fit in one....I bet it would be impressive! WARNING: Do NOT try this!

Never tried to put anything in one. The residual propane is enough for some fun response.

Plus, once they are evacuated and all torn up, you can simply scrap them like any other junk metal.

If the bathroom fixture are in good shape you can take it to Habitat for a tax deduction or if they are real old, there is a market for that kind of thing for people trying to restore old homes.

You have to be careful about the new propane cylinders. I did just that and the new blue rhino tanks now require a magnet to refill the tank. You just got to bring one with you or someone needs to know about that and use a magnet.

If you want to get rid of the propane tanks, I'll take them for my scouts to use.

Not sure I follow. When I turn in the obsolete tanks, I get new/current ones out of the cage.

Your going to pay for the propane but most bottles have a $20.00 deposit. if you went to get a bottle for the first time your going to pay a deposit and the price for the propane too. So if you have a use for the 20lbs bottles yes for around $20.00 a bottle versus $40.00 a bottle they still have a use as a deposit.

With the title of "Propane Tanks and Toilets", I was really hoping for so much more from this thread. :boo:

The new Propane tanks the Blue rhino is refurbishing contains a proprietary Trisafe II valve on it. Essentially it works like a normal valve, except you need a special magnet to refill the tank.

Well OK......but I still don't see what that has to do with me (or anyone) turning in the old tanks in on an exchange basis. I turn the old tanks..or any tank..back in in exchange for a full one.

That is a good thing to know for getting the cheaper refills though...like at Bob's or Three Mules. I'll have to check mine and see if any have that new "feature".

Oh OK, I see, I've stopped exchanging tanks a few years back after finding that companies like blue rhino simply don't fill the tanks all the way. They intentionally leave "head space" during transportation. There was a whole lawsuit and the propane companies won! Apparently the logic is when you do a tank exchange you are paying for a new tank (refurbed tank), propane happens to be in there??

I have 6 or 7 20lb at home, the previous owner left them there. Maybe 3 of these tanks had really old valves or or leaking. I simply exchanged them once at BR and kept refilling the tank. I can get a tank refill with coupon at Do It Best. They always do $10.00 each 20 lb. I also tell the guy to turn the screw (open) to bleed the air out when filling them (many don't)

I never use the tank exchange as a
