Puppies & Feeding

Cat has a good point, the food with the less fillers are healthier for them in the long run. I am running into that problem with the food that I am feeding, I just found out that it is all fillers and could be attibuting to Bandit's seizures.

She is a doll, of course they are all so cuddly, if I lived there I might be arranging a visit.

I would recommend Wellness Puppy, Chicken Soup - Puppy or Canidae.

Large Breed puppy foods cause the puppies to grow too fast. What you need is a balance of fat and protein for the puppy.

The three foods above are human grade foods. The contain no fillers, preservatives, grain or tallow, etc.

It's really too much information to put in here. I did the research and decided what was best for my dogs.
The vet mentioned the 'fillers' issue ... saying that would fatten them up too fast. Are the foods you mention above available at typical grocery stores or Petsmart? We only have two grocery stores within 20 miles of us, but I can have B hit Petsmart up in town during the day.

They are great lookin dogs, I really like the beach pics, especially the one where the pups are followin (mom?) out of the water. :yay:
These dogs LOVE the water! We take 'em out to the lake and play ball with them, they jump off the boat after momma, and when they get tired, they ride on her back to the shore line. They're soooo cute!

No. You have to get these foods from more speciality type pet food stores. It's fairly pricey too.

My brother's husky has had seizures all his life but they haven't figured out what caused them. I wonder if it's the food he feeds him. I'll mention it to him so he can give that a try. :yay:

I'd rather pay a little more for good food now than vet bills for surgeries and medications down the road, so it's worth it. :yay: I'll look into seeing what stores are available up town and have him check it out. Thanks!

I think we pay around $42.00 for the 30 pound bag of Wellness puppy.

It was listed on this forum..."I fostered a 4 yr old American Eskimo dog that had seizures (the adoption agency didnt tell us about this problem or they didnt know). Long, expensive story short - After seeing the vet, I did some research and switched his dog food. I found one that did NOT contain a dog food preservative called BHA which has been suspected of causing seizures (along with BHT and Ethoxyquin). To my knowledge...he hasnt had anymore seizures. I spoke to his adopted mom about a year ago and she said he is doing fine. Make sure you check the ingredients of your dog's food....those 3 preservatives need to be avoided if possible." http://forums.somd.com/showthread.php?t=44974&page=2&pp=15&highlight=seizures

:yay: I'll definately share that with him! The dog is older now (13 I think) and the poor thing has suffered with these for years. :frown:

I'm not sure that it will entirely cure seizures, but it might help to curb them. Bandit has been diagnosed with epilepsy and seems to have seizures when he gets too excited and when the barametric pressure changes dramatically. But, I would like to know if anyone else has changed the dog food and found that it helped/didn't help? The problem is that we have 2 dogs that are over 50 pounds and my husband already complains about price.

I'll mention it to him and see what he opts to do about it. I can only threaten him with cutting his precious daughter's hair if he doesn't as leverage. But if he does, I'll let ya know. :yay:

I wrote a lot about it in other posts. We had a Golden who suffered with seizeures starting about the time he turned 2. Then our Lab started with them. I did a lot of reading and changed dog foods. The Golden stopped having seizures and the occurence in the amount of seizures the Lab had was dramatically reduced. We lost our Golden at 15 last year. We still have the Lab and since changing to the Canidae about a year ago, he has not had any seizures.

Thanks Cat. Appreciate the info, sorry for going off topic. Back to the topic on hand.
