Dems, "passive" means "turned off/not in use".... "active" means "turned on/in use". It is written quite clear.
Passive means it doesn't emit a signal.. it waits for the radar to get to it.. it's limited in range, usually a 1/2 mile to a mile.. the active radar detectors search out a signal, range is out to 4 miles, but is an active detector and it can also be detected. If you have a Passive detector VA can't find it.. and they do search for them, especialy when you cross the 301 bridge,, I also get hit with the VG2 alert when going South on 17..

Sounds like you have the one I have.. the top of the line detector WalMart and Target sells..

and we've discussed this before,, if your laser warning goes off, and you're speeding, you're getting a ticket.

Cobra, I got it at ProAudio this weekend. It was reduced because someone brought it back and the packaging was opened... it was returned, but works well  and I got a good deal on it

All radar detectors are passive, but there is no such thing as a 100% “passive” radar detector in your local Wal-Mart/Target. They are passive in that they do not intentionally transmit RF. These radar detectors use a superhederodyne receiver, some of the RF bleeds out (unintentionally) and that's what the VG2 is detecting. The "VG2 safe" detectors simply detect the superhederodyne receiver of the VG2 system and shut down their local oscillator for a set amount of time. It becomes a game of "who has the faster switch”, your detector or the VG2. A detector could be produced that has no bleed over, or use a different LO technology but you’d pay out the nose for one (I think the Valentine makes a good stab at it, but I have no personal experience).
As far as the "passive" that the VA law mentioned, it refers to passive jamming: RF absorbing paint/bra, chaff, license plate covers ect..

But who wants to take that chance of spending money on one that is VG-2 (?), mine is supposedly the latest and greatest and not detectable, but if I get pulled over whether its on or not in VA apparently they'll take it.

VA will not take your detector. They'll write down the serial number of your detector on the ticket and kindly hand your detector back. It's a $80 fine plus court cost.

How about you just drive the speed limit and then you don't need a detector?

Who said anything about speeding? Your car is probably capable of exceeding the speed limit. Why do you need a car?

An active device would be a jammer that transmits a similar signal to give a false reading to the police radar.

Passive also includes the paint for the license plate that screws up the radar camera.

Cheap (<$150) detectors emit so much noise, the cops only need another cheap detector to find you. I don't know about now but Virginia cops did this at truck stops years ago.

Court costs for what? Saying you have a dectector in the vehicle with you and turned off? Are you serious??

Yes, this morning I was at a stop light right next to a cop and the radar detector was blaring "ALERT!!! ALERT!!! kA 2(?) DETECTED!!! ALERT!!! ALERT!!!" It was super loud, I was embarassed as hell as the cop car was practically smacked up against the truck on the tiny Hughsville light road. Figured that would be all but it kept doing it over and over after the initial alert. Finally, I turned it down, talk about being obvious... :blushing:

Ka Band Radar?

Yes - it's an XRS 9400 11 Band Radar/laser (LIDAR) detector with "extreme range" superheterodyne technology. It has three bands X, K and Ka band and lets me know which one it is... Also it does not emit signals that can be deted by VG-2 or Specter 1, but does detect VG-2 and Spectre 1 signals and will alert me when a devise is in use near my vehicle if I choose, also has saftey alert traffic warning system, stobe alert detecter, etc...

The reason I got one is beause quite frankly I'd always wanted one but wanted to wait for technology to improve on these, I'd remember exboyfriends having one and it would always go off near electronic garage doors, shopping centers, etc... it was more of a nusiance than anything. Now that I have 5 points on my license from last February's speeding ticket 70 in a 35, then picked up another speeding ticket in Arlington this February 43 in a 30. I walked into ProAudio for something else and purchased it. It was reduced significantly because it was returned, I figured what the heck  I never conciously break the speed limit, I'm just in a hurry a lot and if its open road, I tend to drive fast under these conditions :frown:

Don't depend on it to work for Laser. laser has a detectable contact patch of 36". Normally, the officer will be aiming at your front license plate. if your detecor is not with a 36" circle of that plate, it will not detect a laser. A laser needs 3 measurements with consistant readings to get a speed reading. Unless your detector is also a well placed laser jammer, the only thing your detector will do, is let you know that you've been caught.
