Rant on remodeling vs. decor

So, I am in a home remodeling forum on FB. I tend to take a lot of older pieces of furniture I have gotten through either family or thrift shopping and finish it. It is informative to see what materials others are using and some of the new finishing trends. I also like seeing how some people refinish older vanities, kitchen cabinets, family pieces, spaces, etc. - things like that.

But let me tell you what... there are so many nasty women that are truly awful to posters. Case and point, last night, a women posted her finished table for her hallway. She had a old China Cabinet and took the top off just finishing the bottom and using it as a hallway table. The piece turned out very nice and honestly, to buy a piece like that today would be close to $2K in a solid wood.

Some came along and posted - beautiful - love it - looks great

Then the nasties came along - you could loose the baskets on the wall - those candle sticks are way out of place - you have too much on display on that table - you need a much larger mirror - change the lamp shade - the gold color on the wall is awful.

Why are people like this?

aesthetically pleasing is one thing that is specific to that person but creating balance in your design is another. Everything she had in her set up was special to her and deserved space in her home for that reason but the balance did seem off. A simple fix, move the mirror up. That's it. Instead, people dogged her out for what was on display, the color of her wall, the shade on her lamp. The actual piece she refinished is beautiful.

She handled it like a champ and never said anything nasty in response. That poster actually sent me a photo after she moved the mirror up and agreed, that was all that was needed. That was nice of her and I don't typically say things like that but she has such a high ceiling moving the mirror up did make the balance better.

The other day a poster posted that she is in the process of remodeling and decorating a double-wide mobile home. Her and her husband bought a great deal of property out in Tennessee. The pictures I saw of the property are beautiful with lakes, streams, etc. The land included a mobile home that wasn't included in the price of the property. After inspection, they found all units worked well, roof, frame, etc. are in great shape but then they had to tackle the filthy inside. Her and her husband had to mask up and take fresh air breaks outside, often, while they cleaned the place out. There was food left in the kitchen - mice - bugs - but they wanted to give this a go. They are living in their RV while they do this and their original desire to build a house is foiled due to the high price and difficulty in getting material.

I say kudos to them for doing this and they already tackled the kitchen and finished it. It all turned out great. She had one question, her husband insist in on a range vent and she wanted to know which one they thought would look best because she doesn't want any top cabinets.

Nope - people came along and didn't even bother to answer her question - they questioned her choice of cabinets, told her to put up shelves, the wall color, blah blah blah - said they would burn that trailer down and the cat shouldn't be allowed in the kitchen and that is why some don't participate in pot luck meals.

Really? Do people think remodeling is just décor?

Do people not realize the hell hole that kitchen was before and what it is now?

The true beauty of a project is turning a furniture piece and/or space into a functional piece or space.

If something doesn't appeal to me, I keep my comments to myself. What someone does with their home is their business and if they like it- that's cool!
Guess some people didn't heed their Mama's advice: if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all.
In today's world it would be STFU!

This.
Unless someone specifically asks I don't give my opinion on that type of thing. If they do ask, I try to stick to the specific question and be tactful, but honest (I can do that in occasion 😂).

I blame the proliferation of those house flipping shows. On TV, the “experts” declare their opinion, and everyone idolizes them and jumps on it.

So that made people think that they should have a strong opinion on redecoration, even if they don’t know shite about it. Everyone has to be an expert nowadays. And Internet forums just amplify this need.

Most likely, the most vocal critics wouldn’t know which end of the hammer or paint scraper to hold, and have no idea of the actual work to make something structurally sound. They just feel better about themselves criticizing the surface.

Someone who has spent days or months removing layers of old paints from all the turned grooves, replacing the rotten wood pieces, sourcing new piece of glass that fits just right, usually just quietly appreciates the work, grunts in approval, and moves on.

WOW you are exactly right. I know the deeply involved work it takes to refinish an old piece and what's involved in an extensive remodel project.

After all that work, the piece is what matters and her question when she posted it was should I move the mirror up. I think I was the only one to answer her question.

Really doesn't matter what kind of forum you're on, on FB or thru a website. They are the hangouts of pompous asses. be it a remodeling, cars, astronomy, pet forums(cats/dogs) etc...The major players always think they are Gordon Ramsey and can say/do as they please.

I'm a member of a couple of those too. I see plenty of...interesting design choices on those things. But I refuse to do anything but offer compliments or answer with any advice that they've specifically asked for. And I always choose my words wisely. Most of the groups I belong to have admins and keep on top of the rude people. But sometimes I see some real nastiness unfurl.

I posted once about my son's nursery when he was born. I took great care doing that room - the rest of the house was in shambles, since we'd moved while I was pregnant. But I was so proud of that room - still am! It was the only finished room in the whole house up until my son was at least 6 months old. Anyways, I posted pics and most people had lovely things to say but a few really harped on me for some stuff including the white walls!! They were actually a light gray and the bright lighting of the room made the walls look white and several women took me to task over how awful that looks with this navy blue accent wall  some of the more rude stuff were deleted by admin, but not without me seeing first. I hardly got upset, but seriously: If you don't like it, move TF on.

I have been eyeing this wallpaper with lemons and greenery for my laundry room and I normally dislike yellow :sshrug: do whatever you gotta do to make such a room more pleasing to be in

wallpaper is totally coming back in style... not to the extent of the 60's and 70's but back in moderate places.

I have a wallpapered wall behind my TV and wallpaper on this odd corner of a wall in our living room.

I was considering wallpaper in my laundry room but was way too lazy so I just repainted it the same color I had on the walls this past Spring.

I did find some bright flowering cute laundry room picture at the thrift store and hung it in the laundry room which brightened it up. Our laundry room is the size of a tic tac box. :lmao:

Ours is just super boring and simple. My husband is so scared of wallaper. Not the application, he just has no sense of design or risk. His pre-Lucky days had him in a house with 6 different shades of gray and blank walls. I fight for my right in style every room we redo :lmao: Usually I just wait for him to go on travel and do what I wanted to do anyways. But the guest bedroom and Laundry room get zero input from him since he never steps foot in them anyways. We just had to redo our master bathroom a lot sooner than expected thanks to a faulty faucet so my dreams of a lovely print accent wall behind the new vanity were rushed and I didn't have time. Currently researching how I can still manage this without his help since he poo-poo's every suggestion of mine  I'm ready to email his boss and ask to send him on DET again soon.

Sounds like my husband...

I wanted new floors downstairs and he said "but I like carpet." I knew it would look so much better with just one flooring downstairs. Instead, at the time, we had hardwood coming in the front door to linoleum in our kitchen, lament in our laundry, carpet in our living room and side room. FOUR different floorings in our downstairs alone. The hardwood needed sanded, the lament and carpet, replaced.

He kept banging his foot on the kitchen table so I moved it over to the edge of the kitchen. It really couldn't stay there because every time you pulled out a chair, you were 1/2 on and off the carpet. Our kids were home at the time and said "mom, I love that table over there but you know you cannot keep it there because of the carpet right?"

Finally, hubby gets up and says "I will replace all the floors with one flooring if you promise that once I finish it all, the table stays right there, that everyone helps, that we put a large area rug in the living room and I get to have input on the flooring." I said DEAL. He did the right thing because I was real close to having it done the next time he was out of town. :roflmao:My husband gets his way on an awful lot and this was something I really wanted badly. I clean it - not him and I am so glad I didn't have to go to such drastic means.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE the peel and stick wallpapers available from Amazon Prime! I have used them on accent walls in two bathrooms and as the below-chair rail accent in my master bedroom. Thrilled with the result and that if I ever get tired of it I peel and paint or put up a new design. Oh yeah, put up all of it completely by myself (though it would be easier with another set of hands).
