That was, perhaps, a bit of a racially demeaning name.aps45819 said:Remember the resturant chain "Sambo's"

Real inviting... I hope they go out of business.

I never understood that. If I remember the story correctly, a young black man uses his abilities to outwit a tiger. Somewhat cartoonish in the tiger melting.desertrat said:That was, perhaps, a bit of a racially demeaning name.
Who's calling names?Crow Bait said:Name calling only shows that your position is weak.
Oh, crap. There are all kinds of people who wouldn't choose to go to a bar full of actual "rednecks". They're just using the name to suggest what kind of place it might be and I really doubt that they only let "rednecks" in. That would be discriminating. Do they have a dress code? Boots only? Flannel shirts and cowboy hats? T shirts and baseball caps? If they were really discriminating that would be one way to do it. Sound familiar?Crow Bait said:African Americans.

It was a pretty bad stereotype of a tiger too. Most storybooks are oversimplified.Tonio said:The original story was set in India, but the artist drew the characters as really bad stereotypes of African-Americans. But there was nothing wrong with the story itself. My kids have a collection of children's stories with a revised version of the Sambo story - the text is exactly the same except the boy's name is Babaji, and it has different illustrations.
Toots? Took me a few seconds too.Bird Dog said:

Is it their perrogative? Sure... but it seems like a pretty clear case of descrimination to me...
Well there's a reliable source. If it's true keeping trouble makers out seems like a good idea to me.Crow Bait said:At any rate, I know some folks who frequent that bar.
