Wood River students suspended over 'Safe Sex or No Sex' shirts

"Teenagers in Wood River were suspended from school this week for protesting abstinence-only education, while two local colleges refused condom distribution on campus.

On Monday, eighth-graders Cheyenne Byrd and Victoria Shoemaker came to school wearing tank tops written with "Safe Sex or No Sex" and condom packages pinned to them.

Wood River-East Alton Elementary Superintendent Mark Cappel said the girls were asked to change their shirts, and refused. The girls told him they did not believe the school's abstinence-only sex education program was enough."

1. Never know anyone to have changed at school?

2. I see no problem with the shirts themselves, I'm sure that the main issue was having condom "packages?" pinned to them. Either way, I'm all for teaching safe-sex as an option...as opposed to just abstinence. Thats just too conservative for me :yay: Let the kids do it, safely.

:smack: to the school.

Sorry, but they go to an elementary school. There is no need to be wearing condom packages and messages like that around 5 year olds. Their clothing was unacceptable for the situation. They were asked to change. They refused. They were suspended, and rightly so in my book. When I was in middle school, the principle instituted a dress code. If you failed to adhere, you were offered a chance to change. If you failed to change to meet the dress code, you were sent home for a period of reflection on your actions.

Without ranting like a lunatic, tell us why the school deserves a :smack:.

The suspension seems justified to me  insebordination (sp is off I believe?). I am glad the girls took a stand. Hopefully the school will start teaching safe sex and not just abstinence. Two days was a fair suspension for the situation at hand when they refused to change...
It is the same as the sit-in's from back in the "good ol' days" You do it to prove a point, but you also should be expecting to get some sort of punishment for it.

Nothing makes a father prouder then knowing his daughter aspires to be the school slut.

Agreed.

People biatch and moan about the lack of enforcement of dress codes in schools in regards to the baggy pants and boxers hanging out and mid riff baring clothing that kids wear today. BUT these girls violated the school's dress code and were given options which they chose to ignore.

-Good on the girls for fighting for what they believe in and showing others what civil disobedience is about.

-Good on the school for sticking to their guns and following through on approved and mandated punishment.

I'll teach my own 13 year old about these issues, my daughter goes to school to learn, it's not any kids place to go to school to educate others on their own beliefs.

like the one day they decide to wear condom shirts?

point proven. :coffee:

You sound like this is something your kids do, mine won't. From birth they were raise with respect and taught to LISTEN to my wife and I. And my daughter is comfortable with talking with me first about these things and I would support her if she felt the same. But she would not disobey me, sorry, maybe that's the norm in your family...

because lord knows they shouldn't be learning anything about social interaction and that there are other options out there than what mommy and daddy want to teach. You'd never tell kiddie that they can be homosexual either, would you? :lmao: :farrightwing:
