Our new hybrid power system is kicking butt. 40 410w solar panels feeding two SolArk 15 smart inverters with 40kw generator connected that is started automatically if battery state of charge drops below 20% and back off when SOC hits 80%. Lots of nice options out there for this equipment nowadays,
You guys invested a lot and did it right. Sounds impressive.

How often does the genny need to kick in?

This weekend was typical...the battery bank is drawn down to 20% around 0300 in the morning, give or take an hour. The genny takes about 2 hours to bring the battery bank up to 80% charge, where we have it set to shut down again. Genny is a 40KW peak unit but the SolArks are currently limiting the charge rate to 11 kw total. Genny should outlast me.

SolArk is great equipment. Sitting here at my laptop and can see everything the solar plant is doing and has done in the past.

Son was in Mechanicsville when he called me. He said 7 foot part of a tree down on 235. He was warning me to close up.
LEO's closed down our road, trees and live wires down (Mechanicsville area). Neighbors had to spend the night at a hotel after working late. Power came back on around noon on Saturday, SMECO still on our road when I returned home around 6. What a mess, hardwoods down across the road and lines. Quite the sight.

My I laws are at my house right now. They lost power around 6ish last night and it still isn't back. We went and got them around 12:30 today because FIL can't take his breathing treatments. Hopefully it'll be back on soon. I love my FIL better when I'm not spending many hours with him. ETA from SMECO is by 5 this evening. They live in Esperanza neighborhood.
Why do they not have a whole house generator or at least, a battery back up for the medical equipment?

#1: FIL is stubborn and foolish and whenever we suggest he should charge his portable machine he swears he doesn' need to, so it isnt charged when he needs it. Maybe now he will, but I doubt it.

#2: They did have a generator in their old house that was put in about 2 years before they moved. Since they never ended up needing it there he thinks there is no reason to have one where he is now. Maybe now he will, but I doubt it.

That's many people. Complacency. "Everything has been fine, no reason to believe it will be different going forward". And then the wake up call.

Maybe get a decent battery backup and keep it at your house, charged. If there is another event, he's covered despite himself.
