Smoking Addiction

Cricket, you have kicked your habit. Why pick it back up again? It's expensive, it's inconvenient, you catch hell from the innumerable Nazis flitting about looking for something to be angry about - what's the point? And I say that as a dedicated smoker who has no intention of quitting.

but it is fun standing around outside CJ's in Feb freezing getting a Nic Fix

I have a dumb question. How long does it take someone before they get hooked on ciggerettes? What is your experience?

I ask because I used to smoke and quit for a few years, but I'm thinking about taking it back up for a week or a month or two, I never realized how much better my coping skills, thinking skills, emotional control and personalty was. I would like to use it as a crutch for a bit but I'm afraid I'll get hooked. I dont recall how fast I got addicted to nicotine because I denied it most of the time and it was too long ago.

How long before you realized you were hooked? Anyone quit then go back for a few weeks and be able to quit effortlessly?

You have to be on crack to be stupid enough to even think about it. Bad enough you want to kill yourself for a drug addition; but this type of drug DIRECTLY effects the people around you as well, including the unborn child of pregnant women. You must be a "Follower" instead of a "Leader". Bottom line, do yourself "and your friends and family", a favor and find a better way to deal with the daily issues of "life"!!!

Smoked since 1976, 1-2 packs a day. Lobectomy <removal of the lobe> , left side, upper lobe, March 9, 2009.
For some strange reason, I no longer had the desire to smoke once I woke up the next day...:sarcasm:
Those life altering things have a way of doing that to you. Myself, I quit after 30 years and then two weeks later I found out I had breast cancer, I figured it was a test to see how committed I was to quitting, this was five years ago.

Well, I hope you're in complete remission.

Did any doctors tell you it might have been smoking-related?

I smoked for 37 years and I'm very glad I quit, after the first cancer was found in my bladder. Thirteen tumors and five surgeries, six weeks of immunotherapy during which I lost 40 lbs. and was sick every week. I went to my doctor and was given a combination of drugs and the Patch system and got off the cigs. For a long time, even sometimes now, the smell of smoking is gross to me. I was a rabid anti-smoker (some of you here will recall) for a long time, now I'm less so, but still wouldn't want anybody to start back up again after quitting. Prior to my doctor's intervention, I had tried to quit 6 times, unsuccessfully every time. Some people can drop smoking no problem, and I applaud them. Others have to have a very painful reason to stop, and even then some folks keep poisoning themselves right to the grave. Anyhow, there are anti-anxiety meds that will help in the way you expect smoking to help, if you talk to your doctor.

When my Father found out he had lung cancer, and was dying (late stage when diagnosed), he said why quit now? He smoked to the end.

Haven't found anything with 5 years of PET scans. The good thing about PET scans is they look for any kind of cancer, so I haven't had to have a finger wave the whole time. No one thinks it's smoking related, the general concensus is genetic since granpa and two sisters had it, but none of us had any of the usual genetic markers (BRCA1, BRCA2...) generally associated with it.
