A bartender would usually make that statement based on the tips received, not recepits.What's the likelihood that the claim that business being better is based on sales receipts and not the size of the crowd?
Maybe she's getting better tips because her customers aren't paying $5/pack?
Maybe people come in, buy a drink, tip her, drink up, and leave instead of hanging out nursing a beer while they chain smoke?
Maybe the smokers suck down their beer before running outside for a smoke, then buy another one when they come inside?
No matter what, I tend to believe the bartender who sees the crowd every night. It sure beats the anecdotal evidence of "it sure doesn't look as busy to me" that you get by visiting one time.
