(Disclaimer: I will not use the term African American, unless I am referring to someone who has actually relocated from Africa in their lifetime)
Maybe you should consider this... A friend of mine during college found the term African-American inappropriate and offensive when applied to her because she was not an American of African decent, she was a native-born Black African who became an American citizen.

She preferred to be called "African" or "Black."

Bill Cosby would say that a big part of the reason for this behavior is because the black community doesn't police themselves, i.e. they don't take responsibility for themselves.

Now, I know there are exceptions to every stereotype, and I'm certainly not racist - if I meet someone that I can respect, regardless of race, I respect them - but I tend to agree with Cosby.

Maybe your partner didn't bring it on himself, but the black community as a whole brings a lot of it - not all but a lot of it - on themselves.

FYI, my PARTNER IS A GIRL, not a him, but a her, a she, a woman, don't assume in your heterosexual stereotyping that I am with a man because I am a woman.
So what one person brings on themself in that community, should give another person the right to judge the entire community by? I disagree. I am not a cannibal because Jeffrey Dahmer ate all those people, and because most white people are serial killers, doesn't mean I am going to become one, etc.

Racism is alive and well especially in cornflake county, St. Marys!

Which means she relocated from Africa in her lifetime...and if she has an American citizenship- why would she find African- American offensive? She IS an American if she has an American citizenship. Apparently she has some aversion to the "American" part of African-American? Accept the citizenship, but not the "label." In that case I wouldn't even talk to her let alone call her African or black.
And she IS an American born in Africa.

A "girl" as in you are a pedophile? For someone so concerned about racism, and orientation-related stereotypes, I guess gender discrimination is ok.

That makes no sense to me??????? a girl, as in female, I am a female, we're lesbians in case you're not sure what that means. Pedophile? Christ isn't that a stereotype that all gays and lesbians are pedophiles? How am I discriminating against gender? Do explain, this should be a good one.......

The term is a designation of race and cultural background, not citizenship. Her race is African. Her genetic make-up and cultural upbringing had nothing to do with being American. She didn't like the term, she thought those who demanded it's use to be pretentious. She felt if anyone was justified in using it, it was her, but it had come to mean something different, something more like, "African wannabes" and as the real deal, she wanted nothing to do with it.

No, you idiot. "Girl" as in juvenile, youngster, underage, child. YOU used the term to describe your partner. YOU implied you are involved with a child and hence a pedophile. It has nothing to do with orientation, just with you apparently considering your partner to be immature. A male who calls his partner a "girl" is guilty of the same thing.

A buddy of mine married a blonde, blue-eyed woman from South Africa and he delights in introducing her as an Africian-American.
