The term is a designation of race and cultural background, not citizenship. Her race is African. Her genetic make-up and cultural upbringing had nothing to do with being American. She didn't like the term, she thought those who demanded it's use to be pretentious. She felt if anyone was justified in using it, it was her, but it had come to mean something different, something more like, "African wannabes" and as the real deal, she wanted nothing to do with it.

You specifically said she found the term "offensive." But didn't find African offensive... that means that the "American" part was what she found offensive. Why wouldn't she say call me American or black? The majority of Americans have a speckled "cultural" history- so there are very few by your "genetic make-up/cultural upbringing theory" that can actually call themselves Americans.

We are all shades of brown, from ecru, to beige, to tan, to cocoa and to dark chocolate. Didn't judge you by the avatar (matter of fact I just looked close enough to figure out it is an olive splashing down in a martini. I hadn't noticed until now), I just know the history of Native Americans and booze, it's like a poison to many of us. And if you haven't figured it out yet I am somewhat Looney Tunes. 14 years sober hasn't made much of a difference in that arena.
