Solomons Island Turn Around : Waste of Money

I read that Calvert County is going to spend over $1 million to put a circle at the end of the Island by the lab pier. The plan includes moving a BGE Siren, cutting down an large tree and having to move telephone and power poles.

I have never seen an issue with turning around with the current configeration, what a waste of $ IMO.

I agree, they could buy a LOT of sand for the tiki bar instead.

This has got to be coming from complaints of the people that live there on the end of the island.

Wouldn't it just be easier to make it illegal to "cruise" the solomon's island strip? You get caught and the cops give you a ticket. Just like in VA Beach. Post a few signs...problem solved.

Definition of "cruising" would be left up to the police.

All of the people visiting the establishments at the island will be exceptions obviously.

It's not a foolproof plan, and sure people are going to get away with it. But it sure is cheaper than $1M....and probably would generate $$$

I live in america and I can drive on the streets I paid taxes for. Cruising law is BS. Tell the people at the end of the island to move or get over it.

Just make it a gated community like CRC

Actually what they oughta do is put a turntable somewhere up on the main road before you get to the end of the island, like perhaps maybe at the tide box bridge. Then folks could just drive onto the turntable, put a quarter in the slot, and they could get turned around without needing to drive all the way to the end of the island. That way, the drivers would save a bit of gas and the community would make a quarter a car, and everybody would make out!

I say it's a case by case basis.

My personal opinion...Why does one need to drive up and down the same street over and over again? What purpose does that serve?

:yeahthat:

I cruise around the end of the island EVERYTIME i am down there, just like to look at the river.

If the people who live there don't like it they should find a more rural area to live in. I hear ridge has waterfront still available

But driving up and down the same street over and over again is a fine old American tradition! Why does it need to serve a purpose?

Gating

Gating is a ridiculous idea. Solomons Landing tried that, so did Oyster Bay... Both of them have security/gate kiosks that are sit vacant now. The cost of manning a gate is far too expensive versus the consequences.

The alternative electric keypad or pass gate is also a great idea. Everyone knows we can count on power being there 100% time to open the gate....

I have to agree with the earlier comments. I never saw it as a problem except a few times a year. When you live on a cul-de-sac people who have no business being on your street use it. Does that warranty putting up a gate? Try living in St. Charles and what what comes down the street everyone night. If they cried and wanted a gate, they'd get laughed out of the County...

Money certainly talks loader than words. There aren't too many "Rolls" sitting in the drives in St. Charles.

Just my two-cents.

I'm sure you've heard of battery backup.

Guys... I used to work down there, It's totally needed for the window lickers that get to the intersection and don't know where to go. It is especially needed for when it's really busy down there. This has been in the works for almost 10 years. It will be fine!

PS...just because it's SOMD doesn't mean we have to be afraid of traffic circles and overpasses.

By the way... Hello! This is my first post.

I drive the island EVERY time i am down there. I always seem to find something interesting to look at. That should be expected in a beautiful area like that.!

Yah...but you don't clog up intersections looking do you?

I worked there for 8 years and It always amazed me the number of people driving 10mph... staring at something other than the road.

I mean...GET OUT AND WALK!

How cool! That's a great idea!

Obviously those of you who are against the turnaround don't live in one of those houses at the end of the island. I don't either, but I know it can't possibly be fun for these people to have drunks driving past their house at all hours, throwing beer cans in their yard and making general nuisances of themselves.

And you, Negative Nancy - those people OWN that property and most of them were there before the bars and restaurants were. So they have more of a right to enjoy their waterfront than YOU do, since THEY paid for it.

I have lived here 29 years (my whole life) and have been turning around in that area from the time I can remember, ofcourse with my parents when I was a kid and I can't recall a time when I have had to turn around in that spot that it was so crowded it was a problem.

Now granted I try to stay away from "cruising" the Island during real busy times but I can't see spending a $1 million on this project. I am all for over passes and the circles that we are slowly starting to see in this area, I think they work great for the most part.
