Solomons Island Turn Around : Waste of Money

My question is this... is it fair to the rest of the residents of Calvert County to pay for a round about for Solomons.... I'm not sure how I stand on it....

Becky, I am a resident of Chesapeake Beach and don't have a problem funding projects in Solomon's, Prince Frederick or anywhere else in the county. When it comes down to it, we all pay taxes and people in Lusby are paying for projects in Huntingtown, etc. It's all the same. As long as it's money well spent, it doesn't matter where we live in the county. I have a problem with my tax money being spent on some of those crazy democrat social programs, but that's another issue for another forum.

See... I knew if I went to the residents I would get the answer....

Y'all are some of the smartest people I "know" and I am so happy there is a forum like this one to discuss these issues in....

I wish there were a bridge or ferry further down the river. I could get to over to PAX and the surrounding areas quicker than going over the Nice bridge on 301. But, the river is too wide, it would interfere with our gun range and not enough people would use it. I just want my cake and eat it too.

I went to the meeting as well. I was a little surprised...

The circle at Patuxent High School was reported to cost about $1M. But they say this one will cost only $575,000... that is if the artwork in the center of the circle does not push it over budget.

Bobby Swan was the big push behind this project. He said he was there during the design of the master plan and now Jerry Clark is finally there for the funding. I'm a little confuse because it takes 6 years to work something through the Capital Budget but Jerry's "the one"....

The design has a center piece "here's the selling point" that would be a cement stamp, a colored cement treatment, or a picture [kind of like a mosaic]. Candidate Donally was there and he said one of his clients was the one that design the artwork they used. [Bet we know which one he chooses]

Tractor Trailers will be able to make the turn if they roll over the apron of the circle. Cars will be able to turn around and leave again without going into the residential area.

Everyone seemed very happy with it... and if their taxes went up like mine... they could probably pay it off in a year... then again... the civic association could probably pay it off in a year if they decided to do so.... they could use a special taxing district like CRE and Drum Point...

I like the design... and I see some need for a way for tourists to get down there and out again without bothering the residents....

I guess this is one of those time when I would have to ask the people of Lusby, Dowell, Dunkirk or even Huntingtown how they feel about spending $575,000 bonded money on Solomons...
What I heard was that the roundabout had been in the master plan since 1986. And that the county had finally got it through the process where with design approval they could take it to bid. The residents seem to be in favor of the new design and CBL is also going to add some sidewalks to the project.
I don't like the idea of playing one group of citizens against the other. The tax money collected from county residents goes in one big pot and then is spread out to cover county needs. I have not heard Solomons residents moaning about projects in other areas. You need to make up your mind how you sound so that the voters in SOLOMONS WILL KNOW HOW YOU STAND!!

You're right.... Like I said.... I like the idea that tourists can get in and turn around without bothering the residents. I also like the design that Wallace & Montgomery came up with.

The comments here are in favor of the circle.... that's a good thing....

One more thought... they put a lot of thought about the impact on the critical area... they're going to use environmentally friendly grasscreet blocks and saving the trees. The one maple they have to tear down will be replaced. The sidewalks that CBL will be installing will add a lot to the area down there too.

We need to get our crews down there, repave the lot there and mark the parking back in.... that shouldn't cost too much and it would really finish the project at the end....

OK now I'm excited.... somebody get me a gradall.... I'm ready to go to work... :coffee:

Is there a map somewhere showing the proposed (or finalized) roundabout? Is it the area along the Pax River they are trying to bypass? None of this makes a lick of sense to me.

Go past the Tiki Bar, bend around to the right, then go to the T intersection at the bottom of the island. The T intersection is what they're gonna expand with wider swoopier curves and a sorta mini-roundabout that 18-wheelers can, if they need to, roll over the center of in order to make it around the bend. Then they're gonna add more sidewalks, and maybe a few nice benches so folks can smooch with their sweeties while they gaze across the water.

What a colossal waste of money. The sidewalk idea sounds good.
