St Marys Hospital

It's not a scam, I called them yesterday and they verified the letter. I called the paralegal and she just asked me for names and addresses. She did not ask for SS#'s. I also warned my family about this as they hadn't gotten a letter about it, but I knew they had been to the hospital in the past. :howdy:
Either that or you are in on it.

Just kidding.

Got a letter from the hospital yesterday that read, in short, someone stole a lap top from the hospital with patients SSNs etc, on it. We are taking steps to make sure it doesn't happen again.
Why could they not have foreseen that it's not a good idea to put that kind of info on a laptop?

I got the same thing desert......It makes NO SENSE at all that they would keep this info on a laptop... They should have an embedded server with this... buncha retards....

From talking with some folks at work who have received the letter, if you have EVER gone to SMH, your name and personal information are in their database and potentially has been compromised. I was there once after an auto accident about 15 years ago, so even I could have my private information out there. :banghead:

They are supposedly making changes to ensure it never happens again, but it's a little late to close the barn door when all the animals have escaped. :ohwell:

Thanks for the information. I got the letter yesterday too. Just curious, did the paralegal explain why she needed names and addresses?

I know, it makes me feel like saying ," Oh, you need my SSN?, sure you show me yours and I'll show you mine. If mine gets compromised yours goes on Myspace."

Would THIS face lie?
I'm not too up to date on this kind of stuff and I am not a scammer but how do people use your SS# to scam you....I know...Stupid question...

They use your SSN, name, address and birthday the same way you would. To open accounts.

Ok so if something comes of this and someone gets scammed, is St.Mary's Hospital going to be responsible for this? I think they should be, why was all of our info. put on a damn laptop that could obviously get stolen and personal infomation sought out. Makes no sense.

Actually, I do. :yay:

I've had it happen to me twice. Once my credit card was compromised and the other my Visa check cashing card was. I found out about the credit card by checking my monthly statement and finding a charge on there I hadn't made. The other was via a letter from the bank saying a bunch of account holders had had their cards compromised and a new card was on its way shortly.

It is very, very important to check your bank and credit card statements every month and your credit report every six months. It can and WILL happen to you.

I was told that they have contracted with a legit company to help anyone who is concerned about their info being taken. I called earlier...they place a fraud alert on your credit report and monitor your credit for a year. It's free cuz St. Marys paid a lot of $$$ for it. Guess it's the one good thing that comes out of this.

It's also a pain in the butt. Everyone who has one of these flags is going to have to doubly verify their identity each and every time they use any of their cards as my friends and coworkers have already found out.

Also, you can't just change your social security number. Once it's out there, it's out there and a year could easily go by before the scammers try to use it again.
