Students Fed Up With Michelle Obama’s School Lunch Overhaul

So, basically nothing has changed since I was in school.... Any food made for mass consumption and basically given away for free is probably not going to be very tasty.

Nah, I went to the awesome Georgia public school system and the food was good. It was prepared by a treasure trove of overweight black ladies on location (from bulk no doubt) and it was great. Nowdays they have trimmed the cost to the point it is basically inedible. Boy mentioned one day he sat in a class where they preached "Green living" then went to llunch where the trays are styrofoam and the utensils are plastic. :irony:

Some bean counter figured they could save 3 cents per kid using everything disposable. When I am elected the supreme ruler of the universe I will put the overweight balck ladies back in the lunchoom and hard plastic trays back on the tray cart!

Yes but...if I could get back all the many wasted hours spent very actively involved and trying to influence the direction of SMCPS, I would really like that. We/I worked closely with long-time teachers to fight for programs like PACE, STEM and various honors classes..to fight against the ever-growing trend toward achieving a nice lowest-common-denominator result for the majority of students...the squelching of excellence. Were we frustrated at every turn and all our efforts largely irrelevant? You betcha! Our frustration was shared by some of the very excellent teachers we worked with and whom shared our goals. Some years later...many of them are gone now.

These days, you have to get out of the schools and go to the halls of government as that is where the damage is happening right now. Common Core and the associated PARCC computerized testing is killing us right now. This past legislative session, there were some bills regarding it. Look to see more during the next session. That's where involvement could do the best. It's gone beyond the individual schools or even school systems at this point. It's state & national politics now. Big money is involved. Just think, Calvert is projecting an $11 million investment in computers & testing over the next couple of years and they're a small school system. Extrapolate that to a national level. Yep, big money & you know what that means....what's best for kids & teachers doesn't mean squat.

It really is in your best interests to make sure that the public schools are there and a viable option. That doesn't happen if everyone cuts & runs. What happens then is that we get an education system that is divided by class. The rich people go to private schools & the poor people go to public schools.

right because democrats running MD. are going to force any changes on the entrenched teachers unions
... you maybe an excellent teacher, but you are what one among 1000's ....

fixing schools, when was the last time you heard of a teacher being fired for not teaching or doing a good JOB, the UNIONS protect the dead wood, just like they do in the federal gov.

.... no instead we end up with common core and federal regulations for lunches

not everyone sending their children to private schools is rich .... my take home was about 35k after Taxes and Health Insurance ...
.... there is a lot more I would rather do with that 560 bucks a month ...

I'm sure you are correct...on all points. It pains me to see what is happening..what has already happened..to the public education system in Maryland and in the country overall. But I invested the time and energy in trying to affect outcomes when I had my kids in the system. No longer.

If the snack foods are removed from the schools, how can the school board keep from going broke? The kickback from the vending companies has got be be sorely missed once this policy goes into effect.

They already are out. Well, what the kids will eat are. Nothing like a good handful of dry and stale trail mix to get rid of those hunger pangs.

You're usually smarter than this. You know as well as I do that publicizing a termination is asking for a lawsuit, which the school system will lose.

As far as any of the limp dick MD Teacher Associations go I assume you mean the ones that can, by state law, negotiate only for salary and hours. The termination process is totally separate and isn't negotiated, that comes from MSDE and federal/state employment law. Look at some of the local school systems and see where the local Association officers go when their time in office is over. It's amazing how many of them don't go back to the classroom but to the Central Office at a much higher pay. Why do you suppose that is? Maybe a reward for not making waves?

Any Principal can get rid of any teacher at any time, all he has to do is set the teacher up for failure (why do you think there's so much infighting now among teachers to get scheduled with the smart kids. With performance targets the teaching the average to below average kids, the 12th graders reading at 3rd grade level for example, is a losing bet.) and fill out the right paperwork.

My building happens to have a lot of good teachers, and I know many more. The unions are there to ensure that there is due process when there are issues. And I have known several good teachers who ran into a Principal who either didn't like them or wanted to create an opening for a frat brother or sorority sister and then targeted the teacher, making their life a living hell. I also know a teacher who was fired, and rightly so, for smacking the bottom of a first grader who wasn't following directions. The person had other issues & never should have been in a classroom. As soon as her behavior was reported, she was out of the classroom & gone.

We have common core because a bunch of millionaires saw a market that hadn't yet been tapped and maneuvered to get access to it via campaign contributions and a very well-thought out campaign of misinformation under the guise of philanthropy. It's working extremely well because most people don't look any further than the end of their noses or the tree in front of their face.

The car that I drive is 5 years old and has 100,000 miles on it. I have 4 payments to go before it's legally mine. My back-up car (when something is wrong with the main car or it's in for repair/maintenance) is a 2002 Ford wagon with 200,000 miles on it that is leaking oil and needs a radiator repair, and it's been paid for since 2007. And your point about that is???

And that, if you'll forgive me, is part of the problem. Many people give a lot when their kids are in the system and as soon as the kids are graduated, the parents are gone. Public schools are more than just our OWN kids! They educate the future! Just because your kids are not there anymore is no reason to stop being involved. Actually, it's better when your kids are gone because you can be honest about what you see instead of holding your tongue because you don't want blowback on your kids if you make waves. Those kids in school that don't belong to you by blood, sure as heck end up belonging to you in your community! They will become your cops, your lawyers, your nurses, your hairstylists, your pharmacists, your car dealers, your electricians, etc. School involvement should not just be on the part of the parents. It should be the entire community. The fact that it isn't, is why we're in such a mess these days. Everyone is all, "it doesn't impact me so why should I care", not realizing that YES, it DOES impact you! There is a very, very good reason why we have that saying, "it takes a village".

School nutrition group turns on Michelle O, now fighting federal lunch regulations

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The federal government’s attempt to force public school students to eat “healthier” lunches is falling apart at the seams.

trashlunch.jpg

Most recently, the School Nutrition Association – which initially championed the new federal lunch standards on fruits, vegetables, salt, fat, sugar and virtually every other aspect of school lunches when they were implemented in 2012 – is now lobbying Congress to dial back the “overly prescriptive” and expensive changes, the New York Times News Service reports.

“Congress is listening, and it is considering legislation to delay the nutrition regulations for a year, some of which have already gone into effect. But some of the association’s onetime allies in the school-meal campaign are mystified, if not suspicious, concerning the group’s motivations,” the news service reports.

SNA officials rightly point out that many students are throwing away the additional fruits and vegetables included in their lunches, amounting to $684 million in food waste every year – or roughly “enough to serve complete reimbursable school lunches to more than 228 million students,” according to the Times.

The association contends the “nutritious” federal lunch menu is also proving costly for many school districts that are now forced to purchase more expensive foods to comply with the new regulations.

SNA reportedly first expressed concerns about the new federal regulations in 2011, and later met with Agriculture Department officials, but have been largely ignored. That prompted SNA leaders to call on Congress instead, and they have now targeted the group’s lobbying efforts at lawmakers in the House and Senate Appropriations Committees, which are considering legislation to waive the nutrition standards for next school year, according to the Times news service.

High School Lunch Photo Causes Concern Among Parents

WARREN COUNTY, Ky. (WBKO) -- More than 700 students eat lunch at Warren East High School each day.

Someone posted a picture of Tuesday's lunch, and it spread on social media, causing concern among parents over the food's quality.

"They said someone's mom posted it and said, 'This is what they're feeding my 6'3" boy,'" explained Khalil Brit, a junior at the high school.

Several parents even contacted WBKO -- saying students leave hungry.

"In today's social media age nothing ceases to amaze me," said Rob Clayton, the superintendent of Warren County Public Schools.

Clayton said Warren County schools abide by federal regulations.

"So what our food service folks do is look at those guidelines and then look at the best way to provide a healthy and tasty meal as well," Clayton said.

He said students choose what goes on their plates, and picky eaters may turn down some menu items -- possibly explaining the photo posted online.

So you so-called conservatives agree that it's the State's job to feed your children?
