Subsidy gone wrong

More miss than hit  I still see people driving onto the base with months-old expired tags. Saw one about 2-3 weeks ago expired September 2022.
Which, to me, makes no sense. You get an email or text with a link to renew online, literally 5 minutes, new reg is mailed to you in a couple of days. Not renewing can cost in tickets, time and expense in correcting the problem, possible insurance increases...

I know they suspended renewals during the pandemic because of access to MVA, but we're past that now.

When my insurance policy went up the last time, I called and asked why. Was told that "in my area" there is a significant increase in "uninsured motorist accidents."
Was also told that too many people are just not paying their auto insurance bills and are rolling the dice. Not too far off to say that some of these same people are rolling the dice with not paying their registrations either.

I had a similar conversation once, and they said "we paid a LOT of claims last year" and my shouted answer was "that's NOT how it's supposed to work!".

I wonder about that too....because if your vehicle is registered in Md, its' very difficult to get away with operating without insurance. The automated system will flag you quickly if you let your insurance lapse....and then the very hefty fines begin.

If they don't care enough to re-register their car or renew their insurance, what makes anyone think they will care about fines?

I was really only referring to vehicles with current registration. Obviously, if the vehicle isn't even registered, anything goes...

I go to the County Tax assessors office and get my tags renewed No line they charge an extra buck I walk out in ten minutes with my tags.

But here is the next thought. Some people i know well are having their checks stolen from the mail. They send their payment for something in and the next thing the bank is calling them and asking if they made out a check for several thousand dollars. Someone in the USPS is stealing the checks washing them and trying to cash them.

For your consideration ...

I'm a very strong believer in "build a better mousetrap and the world will BEAT A PATH to your door".
Cars were amusements for the rich - until someone figured out a way to make a dirt simple car cost something everyone could afford.

Find a way to make these cars very low frills but at dirt cheap prices - and people will buy them. People already buy electric gators and golf carts just for fun - my mom had one for very short trips.

I am not sure I would ever buy one, because I am likely to always live in an area where a more rugged vehicle is required - where it's cold, remote, on a hill, somewhere a snob-mobile is never likely to do well. But I see people in cities already scooting around on little electric scooters - make it useful, reliable and affordable, and you don't need subsidies.

Not buying that at all. Revenues realized from those with enough money to buy those new cars helped to fund the research and development necessary, and to provide for production scalability, for manufacturers to make cars more affordable. Kinda just like today, where some new things come into the market that are crazy expensive bought by, and only affordable to, the rich, only to have them crash in price when production is scaled up for the masses.

I believe it's called, /s, economies of scale.

Funny story...
Was at the Leonardtown McDonalds yesterday and saw an older Ford F250 parked outside with Historic tags. At that time, the driver came out of the restaurant and I stopped to ask "How do you get a truck like that tagged Historic and how old does it have to be?"
He gladly told me that as soon as the truck turned 20 years old, he went to the MVA and had it re-registered as Historic
Best part was that his "Historic" vehicle had a company logo on both sides of the vehicle. I guess it's not his "daily driver." :killingme

Saw another Historic Buick LaSabre at the Charlotte Hall Wawa. When asked how old the car was, the driver told me "When my plates expired, I got Historic plates 'cause they cost less." :killingme
2 for 2 on the "I didn't get Historics just to bypass inspections!"

I'm still ahead. ALL the people I know that are (or "were" in cases where they got busted for it) running those tags are doing so because they picked up a beater that would never pass inspection. ;-)

Keep counting.

I don't doubt that the people you know have done that very thing for that very reason. I am just saying that for every person you know that did, there are most likely 10 that did it for the lower registration costs and it's their daily driver 👍

Nah.

Run them at your own risk.

Kinda like run a red light at your own risk? Is it really a risk if there is no active enforcement of it or the MVA doesn't scrutinize when they are being registered?
I'm sure my buddy with the van might take issue with your "no active enforcement" claim..LOL.
