Why not?
They provide the video.
I'm saying that they aren't normally used to hook up a DVD player. Those connectors are normally used to connect an additional TV set to an HD box or to use 2 TV sets on one box. Here's the proper connection method for those ports:

There are three colored RCA type jacks on the TV and HD source box , a green one labeled “Y”, a blue labeled Pb and a red labeled Pr. Connect the yellow ends of the cable to the green “Y” jacks, the red ends to the Pr jacks and the remaining plug to the blue colored Pb jacks. The “Y” cable carries all the high definition detail in black and white know as “luminance” while the Pr and Pb supply the color information."

Dup, What is the model number on the Samsung?

I say newer. It was new in 2011. It's a TV in a room where wifey wants to look at some excersize tapes.. OR porn.. Series 5, 530/540 is what is on the user manual.

If those 3 ports work, you might just have them RCA plugs transposed but I wouldn't use them for that type of application.

Most of the newer TV's have 2 or 3 video inputs. Usually in the front, in the back or on the side of the set. Use them if you have them but an HDMI port works the best for DVD's. Do you have more than one HDMI port?

As stated, the red/green/blue wires are COMPONENT video, not COMPOSITE video. Different hookup, different electrical signals. Doesn't matter what colors the wires themselves are, but if the output from the DVD player is red/green/blue, they they have to be plugged into the red/green/blue ports on the TV, plus red/white for audio, then select Component as the TV input.

If the DVD player ports are red/white/yellow, then they have to go into the red/white/yellow ports on the TV, then set the TV to Composite input.

OK, I really, really appreciaqte all the help but you all have left me in the freakin dust.. The first picture is of the back of the DVD/VCR player. The second one is of the back of my TV. On the TV one you will see the HDMI cable hooked up and the 3 RCA cables on the side of the TV is for my Wii (which works fine) On my TV I can change from HDMI to Componant 1 or TV or AV1..Hope this explains it a little better. Just tell me what to plug where and what color cables to use. I have plenty cables.. Thanks

Okay, Component Video 1 (red blue green jacks) out from the DVD player to Component In on the TV, match the red blue green, now if the AV1 set does not work, that might be due to the feed for the Wii being shared. Is that set of jacks named the same AV1?

If so, use that second set of red blue green on the TV.

Use the Line Out red and white jacks next to the component set on the DVD to the red and white ones next to the set of red blue green on the TV.

Easy peasy. On the VCR run a wire from Pb to the bottom row (Line 1) of TV Pb. Another from Pr to Pr, and one more from Y to the jack labeled VIDEO, surrounded by yellow, jack itself is green in color. Then two wires from the DVD red/white Line Out (the ones right next to Y), to the red/white Audio inputs on the same line 1 as the component inputs. Then set the TV to AV1.

.

Good point. AV1 may be shared with the jacks on the side of the TV. In that case, move all the wires up one row to Line 2 on the TV and select Component 2 or AV2 on the TV.

Damn, am I gettin frustrated...Hooked up the GBR cables to the GBR on TV. Nothing... Unplugged the Wii..Nothing. The top row on back of TV is Component 2, bottom row is Component 1, side of TV where Wii is plugged is AV2. I don't think this is Rocket Science but I just can't get it to go. Don't have any picture at all with DVD or VHS. Getting ready to place the whole mess in the front yard and tell wifey we were robbed.. Think she'll buy it. Maybe if I just haul it all off, she wouldn't miss it..

It's entirely possible you're fighting a broken device. I had that happen just yesterday. Friend asked for advice hooking up a sound system to the TV. They followed all the instructions and just could not get it to work. I dropped by their place and after a few minutes of debugging found out that all the audio inputs and outputs on the TV were dead. Used a different TV and all was well.

Put the DVD on a different TV, or use a different player on this tv. Process of elimination. And no, I don't mean crap on it.....

Another thing to keep in mind, given the age of the device, is that you might have to use it's remote to "force" the use of the component output. Itmes these days are pretty much smart enough to know whats plugged in there, but if theres a VCR built into it, chances are it's old enough that component, while offered, might not be the default output.

If you have the remote, see if you can change the output to component. If you cant figure out how, give me a mmodel number, I can maybe pull the owners manual down and figure that out.

But also try and hook it up, if you can, using regular old composite (red white yellow) to the same ports your Wii is in. Since we know those work, this will tell us that the DVD player is working also.

Simple solution: get a new DVD player with HDMI and use that. They're cheap. You can get a network-capable Blu-Ray player for ~$70.

The 80's are over. Time to ditch the VHS.

Good point... That is very possible where my problem is. Old stuff..

Another question.. Are Red, Green, Blue cables any different than Red, White, Yellow? I am thinking as long as they are hooked right, doesn't matter about color. RGB cables look a little different than the RWY ones

Basically no different. The RGB cables might be a bit sturdier, have lower signal loss. But if you're less than 6 feet, it means little.

Valentines Day is Thursday. Buy wifey a whole new set up and have them come set everything up for her.

WIN WIN

She gets what she wants, and she'll think you are so sweet for thinking of her on Valentines day. Awwwwww

Then throw that old shiat out on the lawn and take a hammer to it to end your frustration. I've been there with ya man!! I know the feeling. After two weeks, I had to raise the white flag and have the ex come over and hook up all the electronics. I was pissed I couldn't figure it out, nor could my BIL, son, daugther or daughters boyfriend. It took him 5 minutes and it was done. :cds:
