The Bluebird diet

Question, and I only noticed this because I want to actually use your menu as guide for my own dieting adventure, but on Saturday's Menu it said that at dinner you had a 10oz boneless skinless chicken breast which was only 130 calories, but then on Sunday's lunch menu it listed only an 8oz piece but that was 240 calories (less chicken, more calories). So was the difference something you had on the chicken or was that a miscalculation? You're definitely providing motivation to many to follow in your footsteps!

Good catch! I just went back in to the website and double checked the calculations. An 8 oz portion of boneless, skinless chicken breast is 230 calories and a 10 oz portion would be 300 calories.

I can't recommend the website enough. You can even use it to create to recipe's and it will tell you exactly what's in each portion. I wasn't getting enough fiber so I added Kopnsyl Psyillium fiber to get me between 30-40 grams per day. I have also added a one a day multi vitamin. I'm starting to make a move to add better fats to my diet by eating more nuts, sardines and only no fat dairy products. I'm lactose intolerant so this is easy for me. Olive oil instead of better. No more rice!

Awesome! :cartwheel

My office wants to have a softball team again this year. (non-competitive, fun league) Last year, I sat out because of my arm/shoulder issues - which were ongoing aggravations from the past. I was never sure if it was workout related originally or what. Anyway, I was already going to an Ortho when the softball team idea came up, and even though it's not my throwing arm, it could have been an issue batting (as it was when I attempted to golf) the Ortho Doc said - "maybe next year". :lol: So I became the scorekeeper and cheerleader. :biggrin:

BUT! we are going to practice this spring to attempt to be better players in the fall and have even *more fun. MY big challenge is to see how I do. So I will cheer you on and in turn, I will report back on my softball practice progress!

I used to play softball as a kid and in my early 20's, so it's been a lonnnng time. I saw all the injuries the out of shape co-workers got while playing last year, (including the ones who are literally half my age, but very overweight and out of shape) and it's a lot harder when you're over 55, too. I won't over do it, though. I am only semi-athletic and in pretty good shape for my age. I've never been a cutthroat type of sports player, though, I want to play for fun and win, but I won't take chances and hurt myself. I've been taking Yoga since last August, so I am curious to see how much that has developed my upper body strength for batting and throwing. I've also been doing cardio workouts continuosly for the last 16 years and am hopeful I can run the bases competently. We will see! :lmao:

You can do it Bann! Just don't try and knock the ball out of the park until you know what your shoulder can handle. I'll be rooting for you.

It's a little late now but thought I would post it anyway.

Corned beef and cabbage. Healthy style...

1 4-5 pound beef Brisket, Brined.
1 pound of carrots (mini carrots whole)
1 medium head of cabbage
5 medium potato's
1 Tbsp Thyme
1/2 Tbsp pepper
1/2 Tbsp rosemary
1 Tbsp Garlic powder
1 12 Oz Guinness
2 Tbsp olive oil
1/4 cup of white vinegar
1 bulb of garlic.

In a large skillet add two tablespoons of olive oil over medium heat. Add the beef brisket and allow to sear for 3-4 minutes each side. resist the urge to move or press the meat as it sears. Once the meat is seared on all sides remove it and place it in a crock pot on low. Add the guinness beer, pepper, garlic powder, thyme and rosemary and and allow to cook slowly for 3-4 hours, or until the meat can be almost separated with a fork. With about 30 minutes left on the meat in a large stock pot bring water to a boil and add 1/4 cup of white vinegar and the bulb of garlic (peeled and smashed), to cook the potato's, carrots, and cabbage. Add the whole carrots and potato's then add the cabbage (quartered) the last 10 minutes of cooking. When cooked drain the vegetables. I like to save a little of the juice the meat cooked in to put over my vegetables which I just sort of mash all together.

Serving size is:
6oz of meat with the fat trimmed.
100 Grams potatato (about the 1 medium potato)
100 Grams of carrots (about 1 cup)
100 Grams of Cabbage (I weighed it but it looked like about 2 cups)

Calories = 492.
Carbohydrates = 36
Protein = 28
Fat = 29

I don't like corned beef and cabbage, but thanks for sharing the link, and recipes. Very informative and helpful. Keep up the good work. I think you are enjoying discovering new recipes, and the cooking of it all. :smile: Maybe, you will be on one of Food Network's competitive shows, one day! :lol:

I'm enjoying figuring out ways to make the foods I like to eat healthy so they fit my new way of eating. Nothing tastes as good now as the regular way with things like real butter, cream, salt and other fatty stuff that we're used to eating. My corned beef and cabbage was good though. Tomorrow will be shrimp on the barbi. I'll skewer some shrimp and brush them with a little lemon juice, olive oil and a pinch of old bay, grilled asparagus and some Quinoa (keen waaaaaa)!

I need to go to bed, but I love your posts. Keen waaaaa! :lol: Keep it up! You are an inspiration to us all. I have a husband that is a running maniac, but I am sedate. I used to be active and a gymnast, ball player, and cheerleader in my younger years. Thanks for the boot off the couch! :lol: My hub even has our son and dot running now. I have to get with the program. I do eat rather healthy though. I have lost a taste for meat, but I do the veg, fruit, yogurt, thing, and all that. Almond milk/fruit smoothies are the bomb! I would think that those smoothies would be ok for your goal/program. And if you add chia seeds, oatmeal and agave, they are even better. There are other healthy ingredients such as honey, etc. I do still cook meals every night that includes meat because hub is a definite carnivore. The thing about his over the top ultra running is that he can eat anything he wants and it doesn't matter. He needs the calories to sustain his running, so that he doesn't lose weight. I give him a lot of pasta, rice, bread, potatoes and I eat that, too. I have always been a light weight no matter what I eat. I am 5'2" and 110. I do think it has to do with genetics. I get really mad when people make fun of overweight people. It is not always because they eat too much.

I can't sleep it's like my metabolism is in over drive! I hope I can become a running maniac like your husband is. Right now it just hurts and it takes everything I have to not quit. It's just a strong will power keeping me going. I can't wait for the day to come when all my excess weight is gone.

You are going through carb and especially sugar withdrawal. I have seen this in my hub when he goes on the paleo diet. He has a sweet tooth and loves dessert. I never liked dessert, but I am a maniac for savory. Chips and dip, and all. It is like quitting smoking. You have to get through the withdrawal part and then you will be fine. Hang in! :huggy:

We love all the pleasures that are not good for our health. You can do this!

Also, your comment about your metabolism being on overdrive is the fact that your body is adjusting to a more healthy lifestyle. Your body is mad at you right now!

Well, it's been a long two weeks and I've decided to axe the diet. As it turns out I like being fat. I will eat what I want when I want and as much as I want. See you folks on "My 600 pound life".

A little slip here and there is OK. You're being too hard on yourself.

:yay: This is true! You can always get out and walk if jogging is taking it's toll. Also, cheating now and again is not going to hurt you if you get back up and just resolve all over again to stick to your plan. It's a lifestyle change and it takes time. :huggy:

Losing weight.

Losing weight is probably the hardest thing I've ever done. In 1991, I had a near fatal heart attack. I got a triple bypass. I lost 25% of my primary heart muscle. I had 'heart failure'. I was 250 lbs, never dieted or exercised. My life expectancy was 5 years. My blood work numbers were through the roof. I was ready for dialysis.

Now, I'm in my 70s and weigh 171 lbs. My BP and numbers are down to normal. I'm alive because of dieting.

Dieting is not easy. If it were, 2/3 of American adults would not be overweight. If dieting were easy, 1/3 of American adults wouldn't be obese. But dieting is not easy. We fall prey to our evolutionary call to 'eat whenever you can' because tomorrow, you may not have anything to eat. We fall victim to 'tasty' food artificially enhanced with fat, salt, sugar and chemical flavoring to lure us into eating more... so food processors and manufacturers can make more money.

There is only one way to fight back. A strong will power and personal responsibility... and the knowledge that, yes, every once in a while you will fail. But it takes years... not 2 weeks. It took you years to get to 300 lbs. You should realize it will take time to lose it.

I've included my weight chart for the last 6 years. It shows my many ups and downs. I don't have the charts from earlier years because of a hard drive failure.

Go out to jog if you will. Yes, I still think exercise for weight loss is futile. I'd rather you walk... just to feel the sun and wind on your face. Just to be thankful you are alive. I know I am.

I'm going to stick my neck out and say something really harsh. I hope you will forgive me for that.

Go ahead and eat as much of what you want whenever you want. Enjoy being fat. But don't tell me to see you on 'Your 600 pound life' because I don't think you're going to make it that far.

Don't take on too much. Remember the principle of KISS and take your time.

Your friend... along with GW, Bann, LL and others.

Don't exercise to lose weight - exercise to get & stay fit. Exercise does help your heart, lungs blood pressure, cholesterol levels and other internal organs get healthy. Exercise for your health.

But - and I say this while applauding anyone's efforts to feel better about themselves and be able to jump out of bed in the morning ready to take on the day - thin isn't always an indicator of health and stamina. I have a friend who is a plus size chica and she is in better shape than most people I know, although she is technically 70+ lbs overweight. She bikes, runs, does yoga and other class exercises, and is what I would consider a healthy eater without being a nut about it. Her body type will never be slender because she just isn't.

I think the criteria is: if you feel like crap, do something about it; if you feel great, leave yourself alone. But trying to turn your larger (or older) body type into 20-something thin is unhealthy and not good for you either.
