Anti-War Judge Rejects Foster Teen's Bid to Join Marines

A California judge rejected a foster teen's request for early enlistment with the Marine Corps — and a $10,000 signing bonus — reportedly on the grounds that the judge didn't approve of the Iraq war.

Los Angeles Superior Court Commissioner Marilyn Mackel denied 17-year-old Shawn Sage's request to join the military last October, according to a report in the Los Angeles Daily News.

"The judge said she didn't support the Iraq war for any reason we're over there," Marine recruiter Sgt. Guillermo Medrano of the Simi Valley U.S. Marine Corps recruiting office told the paper.

"She just said all recruiters were the same — that they 'all tap dance and tell me what I want to hear.' She said she didn't want him to fight in it."

Sage, a Simi Valley, Calif., resident, begged the anti-war judge for permission to join, according to the Daily News.

There's really something very messed up with the fact that the Judge can dictate this kid's future in this manner and not what thing can be done about it except for people protesting. This is probably not the only case this Judge as handled like this and even if it is it's one too many. I agree - good thing this kid has a birthday coming up soon.

I am not sure I like female judges. Probably thats sexist, but they all appear to be left wing liberals.

pheh, the judge did him, and the marines, a favor. wonder what part of that movie convinced him that the Marines where the place to be. I thought that movie portrayed the marines rather harshly.
SIMI VALLEY - Shawn Sage long dreamed of joining the military, and watching "Full Metal Jacket" last year really sold him on becoming a Marine.

You mean stupid marine don't you? 'cause if this is his motivation, he's dumber than a bag of crap.

So I interpret this as 17 year olds don't have the right to chose. I bet if it was a 17 year old female wanting an abortion denied by a judge you'd be all over it.... "RIGHT TO CHOSE... RIGHT TO CHOSE..." :jameo:

It makes no difference what movie the kid watched, what affected his decision to join, it's HIS decision not the judges. But, I understand in your everlasting pursuit to relinquish peoples' rights as it fits your leftist mindset.

Yeah, you're right Fauxrest... it's always dumb to want to serve your country and sacrifice all you have (including your life) to that end, regardless of the reasons that motivate them. Just plain dumb.

Your contempt for those that die for your right to spout such blather is disturbing at its minimum.

That's right, as a foster child they are a ward of the state and enlistment law states
no person under eighteen years of age may be originally enlisted without the written consent of his parent or guardian, if he has a parent or guardian entitled to his custody and control.
so if this commissioner is the acting guardian then they get to make the decision for the kid.

You're leading falsely,

Have you seen FMJ? Exactly what part should motivate anyone to join the marines? As I recall that movie portrayed the Marines, and the vietnam war in a very harsh light.

Private Joker: I wanted to be the first kid on the block to get a confirmed kill.

Private Joker: How can you shoot women and children?
Marine gunner: easy, just don't lead them as much.

Have you ever seen Rocketman? Astronauts are so stupid. What part of this movie makes me want to encourage my kids to go into space systems engineering, they are all morons.

Fred Randall: Hey, Commander, were you ever afraid of monsters under your bed? When I was little I used to think there was a baker under my bed.
William Overbeck: No.
Fred Randall: You ever look?
William Overbeck: No.
Fred Randall: Then how do you know there wasn't a baker under your bed?

You, forestal, give me little hope for humanity.

While I disagree with this judges decision, she is in charge of his future because either his parents abandoned him, mis-treated him, or perhaps died. Either way, something happened where this young man became a ward of the court, therefore, leaving decisions as to his future up to the court. It would be the same thing if a parent was against the war and choose not to sign for their child.

I think she was wrong and should have allowed him to join at 17. I did, but I wasn't a foster child.

... and you had your parents permission. If you parents had refused to give permision, you would have had to wait until age 18.
I don't see where this is any different than that.

There is no difference in a judge deciding for a foster then a parent for thier child. My problem is that the judge based her decision on her personal beliefs about the war not on the capacity of this kid to make a decision for himself. If she said no because he was horribly immature or she believed he hadn't given the decision enough thought, I would have no problems.

That's a pretty insulting statement. You seem to like having the government dictate the choices of private citizens. Are you going to like it just as well when they come after you?
