The Bridge.
IMO the view from the Thomas Johnson Bridge is spectacular, worth the ride just to see it.
Bridges are usually built at the narrowest portion of the river. It saves money.
Current is always strongest at the most narrow portion of a river, The tides have to go in and out and the most narrow portion is where the swiftest tides are. The Patuxent being deep and narrow it has swift water.
If I remember correctly the Thomas Johnson was built spectacularly high because the Navy hadnt made up their mind whether or not they wanted to put large ships in mothballs farther up the river. I believe they brought a ship in and docked it inside the bridge area just to assure that the bridge would not interfere with transit of large ships.
Before the bridge was built most of the people who worked on the base lived in St. Mary's. The bridge was nice but it wasnt all that important. The lower portion of Calvert was sparsely populated with natives of the area.Things have changed and now the bridge has become vital . Many employees of the base depend on the Bridge, many homeowners shop in St. Mary's or work for Base Contractors.
What would happen if the bridge were closed for a long time. It would wreak havoc on family's ,the community, and the economics of both counties.
Do you believe they really care in Annapolis? Not until it happens.
IMO we need a second span at Morgantown and another span to Solomon's at Rt.4 next to the current span.
I am in favor of a Bridge from Solomon's to the Eastern Shore. Rot's o' Ruck there.
